Help as above, disconnected outside temp behind bumper, now shows -40 after reconnecting.

What do I do?

Poss the amb temp sensor behind the front bumper crash bar. A cheap part but a pita to fit.

I think -40 is the default figure if the car doesn’t get a correct signal from the sensor.
Could be the sensor, bad connection or a wiring fault.
Last time I bought a sensor it was around £16 so not too bad.
The circuit connects in to a multi plug below the OS headlamp.
Mine had a bad connection here but only because the body had been off and the plug not clipped in properly.

Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.

Correct, the default signal on CAN without a sensor fitted is -40Deg C. If you disconnect and reconnect the sensor a few times, it might remove the surface corrosion on the connectors and make a good contact. A hard reset shouldn't be needed.
