Would i be mad to buy disco 3 with 125000 PLUS on the clock?

Hi Guys,

Just as the title says, Would i be mad to buy disco 3 with 125000 PLUS on the clock? The reason i am asking is that there are plenty out there which means i can keep cash back for all the mods i want to do.

Thanks in advance

D

Hi Ice,

Did you have to anything major to it? Always shied away from high milers but have been watching a few you tube movies from the use and these guys do not think twice about buying 100,000 or 150,000 mile cars.

I suppose if they have full service history and the belts are done at the right time. Still not sure.

Cheers

I drive one with 312.000kms , going strong .. ...driving it back from Portugal in five weeks.
Then it needs its yearly update... ..this one will cost me around € 2000,- ...
Distribution, oilpump, brake lines and normal service... Rolling Eyes

But then its good as new, for the next twelve months. No depreciation on car to be 12 years old soon..
Should be getting dearer, like Whiskey .... Though wouldn't be much use to be if I'd had to keep it in an oak barrel instead of driving it... Rolling with laughter

Wow nearly 200000 miles and still going strong. If discos go the same way as defenders then i think they will increase in value the older they get the better they get if there kept in good nic.

Well, it has the original autobox and original engine too... Thats quite rare I guess...
Did a mega flush once, changed the radiator about five years ago...

Mechanic - english btw - says its the smoothest box of all LR's he services...
Dunno if that's just relating to the D3's or all running gear passing his hands... Laughing

I'm about 70 miles off 200k now Shocked

I've done lots of bits to it that you would any age discovery, the only mileage related issue I have that is going to be expensive is the gearbox. Lots of blokes on here get away with just a Torque Converter but with my mileage they told me I need a full recon costing between £2,500 - £2,800

Mine had lots and lots of receipts and I'm usually quite proactive with my maintenance so I've not had any major issues...........barring the gearbox! Big Cry

Have an 07 D3 XS with 65000 miles on the clock and have had it from new. Given the uncertainty of where we are going with diesels I am going to run it into the ground if that be possible given that it does less than 5000 miles per year and I am the wrong side of 70. Regular maintenance is the secret I believe to keep it going. To date Mike in Dundee has looked after it for the last 5 years and it going like a dream. May it continue for years to come and as for the tree huggers "damn their eyes and may the worms feast on their entrails" arr Jim lad and a bottle of rum me hearties.

Mine has 185,000 on it.

It's had a few minor mods done to it too.

Preventative maintenance is the key.

I would highly recommend buying a "known" vehicle from a forum member with a solid history. These vehicles do much better in the hands of an enthusiast and that is worth an extra grand or two.
 D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven

Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..

United Kingdom

Got mine at 163k miles.
Was worried at first but during research for this one I was at a bit more at ease.

2005 manual.
But had gearbox, flywheel and clutch replaced at 120k so big spend went to someone else!!

As others said routine maintenance is the key.
Do it right and at the right intervals and it should go on and on.

My 300tdi is currently at 180k and still going... but I retired that from towing duties as hill starts were getting a struggle and I wanted a little more refinement and pull. (Well admittedly air con mainly!!)
If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

Times change, if you go back 30 years anything with 100k on it was totally and utterly fubared, nowadays 100k is literally nothing IF its been serviced!

Dont think discos will ever be worth defender money like for like age wise as discos are just plain boring and always have been.

Mine has over 233,000 on the clock now, bought it 3 years ago with about 148,000.

Recently needed a wheel bearing for MOT, and has had front lower arms and rear upper arms, various other suspension bits. New air compressor and reservoir tank, add in an alternator and a precautionary oil pump when doing the belts at 210,000, and that's about 'all' other than routine servicing!

But most of those things should now mean they won't need doing again for at least a while...

With it recently passing an MOT I plan keeping it for at least another 12 months, so should be over quarter of a million miles by then. Surprised

Manual with 212,000 miles from new. Had the belts and service done at 207,000. Still has the original turbo and injectors. It is the most stupidly reliable car ever.

As long as you get one with a good service history and loads of receipts showing whats been done and know what is likely to come up I wouldn't worry about mileage.

Mine has 125k on the clock and all these posts give me hope for a long and happy relationship. Unless I suddenly have the money for a D4. Whistle
