Jacking on towbar?

Very used to jacking my D2 using the towbar to get both rear wheels off the ground - is this considered ok on the D3 with LR fixed towbar?

My neighbour used to do this on his D1 and work under it for hours without jack stands and it terrified me.

Jacking on it... Maybe. Not my choice. I'd do it as per LRs recommendations personally as other wise you're relying on the bolts holding the towbar on to sort out a LOT of mass. But I would certainly then support correctly on decent axle stands before getting under it. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I've been under a car when a jack failed.... not something I'd like to repeat. Maybe to lift it but I wouldn't go under anything that isn't supported in multiple places ever again.

It was a Renault 4 and all 4 wheels were on it.... but it hurt, to this day I don't know how I didn't break every rib in my body.

i worked with my dad as an hgv mechanic for a few years
he would never go under a jacked vehicle without a safety block

he had a couple of very solid wooden blocks about 24"x 24 x 24 always slid them under
anything jacked only if it was ramp lifted would they not come out

I got many a lecture about jack collapses , anyone who takes a chance is playing russian roulette MY05 SE D3 Manual my first LR what a car

MY14 XXV more buttons than the spaceshuttle

I too a, careful.

When I bought the disco I bought a 3 ton trolley jack, and 6 ton axle stands (12 tons in total). Never go under the car withought both stands in place. I also usually put a wheel under as well, although with the Disco I am not sure that would do much good.

And I bought some 6 ton ramps...overkill? I dont care if it is.

Thanks for the replies - I always use axle stands

I was simply asking about using the towbar to lift it to get the stands under I should have made it clearer.

It seems precarious jacking at the LR points ie jack up get axle stand under one side - go round the other side & jack that up & put axle stand under. There is movement however you do it - Jack under the towbar get it up evenly & put both axle stands under, then lower it on to the stands seems safer. I used 2 trolley jacks to sort out my handbrake shoe problem as you need both wheels off the deck to adjust the shoes.

Looking around regarding this, I like the idea of a D2 jack under the wishbones to change a wheel Smile

Just jack under the rear diff to lift both sides at the same time.
