Garry has made a good point. It maybe worth removing the heads before purchasing a new engine to see what the damage is.
People maybe helpful now, but not many with experience of removing a complete engine (without body removal)

I wouldn't disagree on that point but provides some lessons for the way ahead for the OP in this thread - however if in Aust the easiest and cheapest way is a no brainer - an engine out of an Aussie Ford Territory and dont even bother with trying to fix the old engine - the Ford engine is far cheaper and newer.
Our Ford engine is in almost all respects the same as the LR version but I am not sure if the same applies in the UK with Jag or Citroen engines or if there is any cost savings.
