All of my Discos have been V8 autos. Never had an issue with the auto box.
I had the 2004 D2, mate had the 2005 D3 (4.0 V6). I have to say the D3 is a quantum step forward in terms of refinement. My step from D2 to D4 was a real eye opener.
Still sad to see the D2 drive away though.
Best bet is drive both, and see if the difference in refinement bothers you.King of the typo.
MY11 D4 5.0 V8, Bournville, lots of goodies!
Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!

D2 great car, massive step up from the D1, crap 4 speed auto kills what power the td5 has, manual version clutches and DMF expensive.
D3 even better car, again massive step up from the D2, 6 speed auto suits the v6 engine and the car well, manual version clutches and DMF expensive.

I've had two D2's from new, longest I've kept one is 1year, I've had one D3 still have it after nearly 13 years, that should answer your question.
There are some real bargain D3's out there that still drive as good if not better than new, forget D2 autos and manual D3's, buy one with good service history from someone on this site and you won't regret it
Horses like a smoooth ride, they won't get a smoother ride than in a D3 auto, horse box on the back of a D2 nessitates starting off in low box then moving into high box with a massive crunch and jerk. You will also need a good supply of Volterol for the gear changing arm It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I have both, a remapped D2 manual with ACE and a D3 Auto.
The D2 in that format is a great car to drive, you can really hussle it along and it's pretty nimble.
The D3 is a great drive but it's not as good on the twisty stuff.
D2 TD5 Auto ok to drive but the issue is the torque converter lockup is at something like 52mph so on A/B roads they can drink the fuel and when towing a trailer can easily be around same mpg as a V8.
Personally if I was buying a D2 it would be a manual and if I was buying a D3 I would buy a Auto. I think the D3 suit an Auto better.IID PRO
