Buying a Discovery 3
Hi All.
I'm a new member and looking at buying my first Discovery 3. I have seen a 2006 plate Land Rover Discovery 3 3 Tdv6 in excellent condition and full service history with 98000 on the clock for £7000. This is currently on Autotrader being sold by JMC Motors Ltd of Oldham (some pictures below). It also comes with 3 months warranty. Is this a good buy?? I am after a 2006 due to the lower road tax. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I think the wife will strangle me as I have been going on about buying one for some time!!!!

I went to see an almost identical machine here in Wiltshire last weekend. Same age, colour and mileage. Same price too. I was advised it was overpriced. Kept looking and bought an 05 HSE from a forum member for considerably less.
There will certainly be cheaper ones out there with good spec and history but sometimes you can't beat the convenience of a local purchase. Not sure that is worth an extra grand or so though.

If the higher road tax worries you don't buy a Disco3.

The difference would pay for a week's fuel.

I appreciate the comments but I am still none the wiser as never having owned a Discovery before I do not know what to expect. A lot of blurb on the internet say there a great car but after your comments not so sure now. Looking for something spacious and that will tow a caravan and thought it would be an ideal choice. Am now proper confused!!! Are they expensive to run, maintain etc????

Look at the various guides here on the Disco3.co.uk site. It has a banner proclaiming full service history. You need to go through that in detail. Are they Main Dealer/LR Authorised Service Centre stamps? If not are they reputable garages. Cambelt etc. change (the big one) needs to have been done.
Car looks clean enough though.

Any vehicle can break down so I would not worry about that. IMO the Disco 3 is an awesome piece of kit and the backup the folks on here give is awesome so if you fancy you would be able to have a go at fixing yourself. TBH I like the fact that they are user friendly and have already got the iid tool to assist me. Just do the usual checks (On here somewhere under buying guide or such) and you won't be disappointed. Looks to be in good condition from the photo's so that is a good start. Price seems reasonable too. Cheers

Don't go by stamps, that's no where near as meaningful as invoices. My now gone D3 file (06, 165k) was about 3" thick. If it's just got the stamps for the services you have no idea if the myriad of other stuff has been done or are you going to play catchup.

Spoke to them today (John Shaw) and it was one of there directors that had owned the vehicle and it had according to them....been well looked after, timing belts done at 65000. Have got no invoices though from the guys who are selling it!!

Great start to negotiate down then. Belts service should give some reassurance.

If you go ahead, consider getting a Warranty Direct policy at the same time - it covers wear and tear and, at 98k miles, you should still be OK. The dealer warranty of 90 days will take you through their 90 day exclusion and give you good cover.
I'm speaking as a D4 owner, but I wouldn't have a different car. D3 looks just as good.2014 - D4 2010 HSE Nara Bronze
2012 - FL2 2009 GS Stornoway Grey
2001 - VW Passat Estate Inky Blue
1999 - Ford Mondeo Light Blue
