Steering Wheel shaking after brake replacement |
|
I just had the front brake pads and disks replaced on my '11 LR4 5.0 V8. When reaching about 70-100kph, the steering wheel starts to shake pretty badly. This does not happen every time i drive, mostly when the engine / car is still cold.
When I took it back to the garage that replaced the brakes, I was told that the lower control arms need to be replaced and I was quoted 1300€. I've never had any shaking or vibrations prior to the brake replacement. It started the day I got the car back. Can the shaking really start from one day to the other because of old control arms or is the garage just trying to make a good buck? '05 LR3 4.4L V8 SE - Java Black

Check that all the wheel weights are on and none have fell off, there will be marks of glue where they where, they may be inboard of the rim as well as outboard.
To check the suspension bushes dab the brakes at 5mph, if you hear a positive bump they or the anti-roll bar bushes need changing. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Did they clean the hub before fitting new discs ?
Would this only cause problems when braking ?

wheel nuts are tight and I'm taking the car to a different garage tomorrow and let them check again. I think the bushes are somewhat worn as I hear and feel a slight bump when going over speed bumps or manhole covers. I just never had a problem with the wheel shaking and was confused why it suddenly started dramatically after the brake change. I'm still going to check the wheel weights though! I've had similar issues on LRs of past.
Sticking calliper is definitely something to look for, check to see if either of the wheels is running hot after a drive, this will indicate the calliper is binding on, the vibration is the symptom.
Also, I have had new discs and pads fitted and found I had vibration and steering wheel shake under braking, this turned out to be my hubs being out of true, so the garage skimmed my discs to match the hubs, as that was cheaper than fitting new hubs. Cleared it up. 1998 Defender 110 TUM HS FFR Hard Top XD WOLF

Sticky caliper.
With new pads fitted, the pistons are now further back in their bores, and this can cause what was a good caliper to seize. Get it sorted out before it ruins your new discs. Check brake temp with an ir thermometer.
