(FIXED!) D3, Blue Smoke When Idling and Chirping (FIXED!)
Hello everyone,
After nearly a year of owning my first D3, at 106k it's starting to become troublesome.
The major issue I'm having is whenever I'm stationary I see a tonne of blue smoke in my mirrors.... the longer I stay there, the worse it gets and whenever I drive away, it clears.
Also, I've started to notice a strange chirping/ sucking noise when both letting off and maintaining revs.
I've seen and read the links to split intercooler hoses, and my question to that is... are there any particular hoses that crack, or is it just a case of getting them all off and replacing them?

Blue smoke would indicate burning oil. What's the oil consumption like?

Hi Gareth.
Oil consumption doesn't seem to be too bad. I even dropped some out thinking that it may have been overfilled by the garage that previously serviced it... but nothing changed so I topped it back up again yesterday..Ross

Well I'd start with the cheaper things, and replace all the hoses, get the intercooler off and check for leaks and cracks, clean it out of all the crap. (Or just fit a new one!)
If that's no good, then you have to start thinking expensive things, like you say the turbo, or even injectors, but I would expect white smoke in that case.

Hi guys,
Sorry I've been away on detachment and been pulled from pillar to post in work for a while. I have managed to get a few things done in between and have finally found the solution to my problem (after quite some expense)!
Right, so I checked every hose that I could find (with my fingers crossed), but couldn't find anything wrong. Took it to L/R to get MOT'd and have them cast an eye over it (because they're professionals, right?)...... BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!
MOT fail on emissions....
This is what they suspected was wrong -
Exhaust requires removing to inspect turbo. Suspect turbo oil seals have gone, causing excessive smoke. Suspect turbo requires replacing. £1634.04
EGR valve o/s permanent fault. Requires new EGR valve and PCM update. £348.30
After much assurance from the technician that it was the turbo causing the problem, I decided that I couldn't be arsed finding a cheaper place to sort it would just get the turbo replaced by them. So that's £1634.04.... so far.....
Got a phone call the next day saying it passed MOT and was ready for pick-up. So brilliant it had finally been fixed and got told it would still smoke until about 100miles because there was some oil still in the system. So I drove to Inverness and back....Still smoking...FML. Took it back and told them what was wrong, Gave me an Evoque for the weekend (hated it), and then told me they were gonna charge me for looking at it but they couldn't find a problem, but now both my EGR's had failed and both need replacing.
So I took it home blanked them off (£50-ish) ....still smoking.
Checked my injectors and Inj1 was below the others at around 800 when the other 5 were reading over 1000.
So I took the gamble and ordered a second hand tested one on ebay for £60 and ordered a Disco 3 servicing kit from Rimmer Bros (£52), did it all the next weekend and BOOM.... Ran like it had just come off the production line!
Now I can sit at a junction without the embarrassment of choking the people behind me to death!

More mpg on its way! It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I thought overfueling injectors caused white smoke ?? And I've known forever that blue smoke is burning oil, now confused

Forgot to mention that I was told that the Chirping noise is the torque converter. Apparently they're notorious for it when they get older?
DSL, The garage is Pentland L/R in Elgin now, but was Frank Ogg until recently.
HugeViking, That was exactly what threw me off! Did my head in for months trying to figure it out!
Sputnix, It must just be the Scottish Disco's
I'll See if I can get a picture up tomorrow of the culprit. Took me ages to get it out, it was proper in there!Ross

Sorry, yes Pentland, wrong franshise.
I stopped using them a good few years ago after a few "ouch" bills for them that should have been simple things.

Hugeviking mine was also definitely blue, I suppose it is because diesel is oily even if low Viscosity, my GAP actually told me No2 had an internal leak which I will leave to the geniuses to explain how it does that.
Yes

Since common rail came out the old days of white meaning water, blue meaning oil etc have all gone out of the window.
