Oil Pump - Should I replace

Hi all

I have stripped the cam belt cover of to have a look at the oil pump on my 2005 Disco and this is what I found - do I replace the pump for peace of mind?

About to do a second belt change on my 05 - what are we looking at here? Is there a visible crack?

Yes, I know about the problem and solution - just interested if the op or Mikey could see a crack. I intend to change my pump when I do the belts. The comparative photos are helpful.

There is no visible crack in the casting - this is more preventative maintenance as I have got the front end in bits to replace a duff alternator so I thought I would go a bit further and check the oil pump

My Disco is a 2005 so I was hoping that the pump casing would be of the strong type but after looking at Woodys photos there is definitely a part of the cast webbing not there so the old pump is coming off - the Disco is on 162k so the extra oil pressure from a new pump will help her last a bit longer.

The Disco isn't worth a lot but I use it for work and its invaluable for what I need it for so for the sake of a couple of hundred quids worth of parts it will hopefully prolong its life Thumbs Up

I have a pin set to lock the cam pulleys but not a crankshaft locking tool

Does anyone know if this will do the job - I have ordered it as its only £10

I think you might struggle with that pin, the correct pin is tight in the hole and some members have had to slim it down to fit in the hole.

Flack Thumbs Up

Don't forget to get a genuine LR crank seal ~£5, and research all the fun in fitting it, and leaving it to settle.
I believe there is also a plastic tool to assist.

Otherwise it pops out, leaks oil and you have to take the car apart again Sad

Crank locking: Note there is one for D3 manual gearbox and different one for automatic.

Sadly you should have paid an extra couple of quid and got these

The back left one is for automatic.

The bracket isn't important.

Ok, so op's photos are just to identify that the original pump is still fitted, and DM recommends changing the pump now - sound advice I'm sure

Thanks Pete K and Flack

The new seal and crank bolt are both ordered + cam belt, idler kit and auxiliary ribbed belt

I have ordered the EBay locking kit as well as it's a bargain at that price and even though I have ordered the Laser locking tool they are both a lot cheaper than putting it in to LR Thumbs Up

New oil pump, new crank seal, new belts and new alternator all fitted tonight - I had a bit of messing about with the crank locking pin as it wouldn't fit but no more worries over the tensioner breaking off and she is all running good Thumbs Up

The Lazer tool was to small so I am glad I ordered the correct one of EBay

I had to grind the Ebay tool down as the zinc plating was very thick and wouldn't fit through the hole in the back plate
