Electrical fire
On way into work tonight my indicators started flashing irregular, thought it maybe the resistor fitted to the led rear lamps, but on stopping suspension fault warning came up.
I turned it off and tried to restart and just got a clicking like a flat battery, popped bonnet to check battery, interior lights very dim and no ignition lights on dash then noticed a small amount of smoke from front end
Disconnected battery and can smell that bitter burnt electric smell from around the o/s/for corner of engine bay, can't see anything obvious, put a meter across battery and it's still showing 12 volts
Long shot but any suggestions, what side is alternator?

Classic alternator failure.

There's a great guide on here - will dig out the link in a minute. Takes about an hour if you take your time. You need spanners for the Viscous Fan, 13mm socket and ideally a 13mm ratchet spanner for the three bolts on the alternator and a breaker bar with a 3/8th adaptor for the tensioner. I did mine last weekend
Advanced Factors do the OEM alternator, a replacement belt and the fan spanners as a package. Use code ADVLRF for a 5% discount
I'm going out on a limb here..... Changing the alternator?

Well I started an fell at the viscous hurdle, it will not budge and I've now split the jaws on the spanner so I'm now scratching my head as how the **** I'm going to get it undone

Not keen on the chisel method judging by the marks on the flanks of the nut looks like someone has already done that so making the correct size spanner a bit of a sloppy fit.
Local factors have the proper kit Spanner/holder to get them of so looks like I'm splashing out on that and hope it does the trick

Sorted now even with a 2 foot long locking bar and spanner it still took some moving, once off it was straight forward, thanks to the guide by Methley
