D3 electric handbrake - how does it work? |
|
Mine has recently started making a hideous screeching noise - so for now I have stopped using it and leaving the car in park.
it's gone into the garage tonight to be worked on tomorrow.
but I don't actually understand how the handbrake system works on a D3 as this is the first electric handbrake car i've owned.
is the screeching a failed servo somewhere?
thanks in advance

Basically it is an electric motor driving a gearbox pulling the brake cables on by screwing a nut along a thread. If it seizes or has excess travel ( due to the park brake wearing and not being adjusted ) it will then sort of ratchet creating the horrendous noise. If caught early , a reset , lube and adjustment will resolve it. Worst case its a new actuator assembly See bodsys Bible http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4184

Mine makes a noise when applying but not horrendous. Sounds like a noisy motor noisy for a second. Is this just a case of needing lubing somewhere?
Also when in access or off road height and after applying the handbrake when releasing the foot brake it rocks a smidge but ok in normal height. Is this just a quirk or a sign that the epb needs adjusting? 2006 TdV6 HSE.

^^Yours sounds quite normal, the motor can be heard for a second when applying or releasing, 'hideous screeching' though requires attention, see Bodsys Brake Bible in the Wiki
