Oil Advice Please

Different twist on an old theme. Had my 2006MY TDV6 HSE D3 for 3 months now. Just past 112k miles and trying to get everything together for a service, gearbox double flush, front & rear diff and transfer box oil change.
Ordered the transfer box and rear diff (locker) oil last week, telling the guy on the phone I was only interested in LR for the transfer box and Castrol carbon mod for the diff.
So, this morning Parcelforce turn up with a delivery. Inside I find 2 x 1L Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus - both bottles look beaten up and have a "code" on the neck 20.05.05 (date code - anyone?). Also in the box I found 2 x 1L ITC Transmission Fluid OIL0002 made by an Austrian company S-Tec (not the LR stuff I specified).
What should I do? Call the supplier and have him collect this Censored and give me a full refund? Or, the Castrol should be OK (no degradation over time) and the Austrian stuff is fine for the D3's transfer box?
I'd rather not name the supplier, but they're not some Johnny-come-lately back street Chinese flea bay outfit.
All help welcomed!

I have same model car as yours. I went through this whole research exercise because the genuine transfer case oil is about $90 a litre here in Australia.

I ended up buying Ravenol TF-0870, a German made product. It sells in your part of the world for about 15 quid. Using the internet I was able to confirm that it was suited to the requirements of the Magna-Steyr transfer case which I suspect is made in Germany or even Austria perhaps.
So I suggest that, if asked, your supplier should be able to provide proof in the form of a cross reference against the manufacturers specs of both the transfer case and the oil.

If they cant prove that in black & white I would request a refund.

Enndublya,
Cheers for the response from afar. Spent a fantastic 3 months working in Melbourne a long time ago, only got as far west as Adelaide.
So this transfer box is German/Austrian (Magna-Steyr)????? But is the oil OK? This forum is fantastic, but is capable of frightening the livin' bejeesus out of the most hardened of men (and girls).
Any thoughts on the "sell by date" on the Castrol SAF Carbon MOD Plus?

If it's not what you ordered I would send it back. I purchased my diff and transfer box oils from advanced factors. They weren't branded LR and I can't confirm if they are the exact same oil, however their reputation in these parts speaks for itself so I was happy to take their recommendations

Like I said, you need to ask the supplier to match up the specs of the oil against the specified requirements of the Magna-Steyr transfer case.

Hopefully though, after you verbally specified the LandRover product they didnt charge you the LandRover genuine product price ???

Enndublya,
No, not LR prices, thought it was a sweet deal. Good price on the Castrol as well! Only 12 years old!

bimblephish,
No, not what I ordered. I'll be on the phone to arrange refund. I'm well aware of Advanced Factors (they're only just down the road from me Laughing ) I'll be using their services in the future but not this time - I really do want the genuine stuff
Cheers,

I use Royal Purple "SynchroMax" for the transfer case and Castrol 75/90 synthetic for front and rear diffs. Vehicle does not have e-diff. As the diff's only take a small amount, I change it each time I do an oil change

Quelle surprise. They didn't call back. So called them again today, chap took all the details and promised a call back. Quelle bonne surprise, guy I spoke to yesterday calls me back saying they need to check the phone recordings, but the only person capable is on holiday, and he'll get the person looking at my issue to ring me back. Guess what?
So I'll be on the phone to them again tomorrow.

OK, just got a fairly positive call back from the supplier. They've checked the original phone call and accept that I specifically requested the LR transfer case oil and they're seeing if they can supply.
They also accept that it is a date code on the bottle and they're looking to see if they can supply more recent stuff.
They've also mention collecting the incorrect oil.
I've also emailed OpieOils for their opinion about the date and whether it's still good at 12 years old.
I'll post back when I have more info.

All oils oxidise as they age so that will affect the oil somewhat -although it wont be really all that significant as heat is the thing that rapidly speeds up the process. However at 12yrs sitting around theres a fairly good chance that the heavier additives in the oil will have started to settle out of the oil

Thanks for that info shanegtr.
Tim @ Opie has come back advising that Castrol recommend it's use within 2 years of production.
I've had a call from the supplier this morning and they're sourcing some genuine LR transfer box oil. They also said they've checked their stock and the few bottles of the Castrol left are all similar dates but they'll try and get some new stock in. All good then. Keep you posted.

OK, last Friday Parcelforce collected the old Castrol and S-Tec stuff and delivered a new box.
Inside I found 2 Land Rover badged Special Transfer box oil (hurrah) and 2 bottles of Castrol BOT 720 (WTF?). Did some surfing and would I be right in thinking that BOT 720 is the new SAF Carbon Mod Plus?
I'm convinced getting 2 litres of unicorn blood and a couple of millilitres of angel tears would be easier. Changing names is usually to protect the innocent, but with this stuff it's as if "Hey, let's make this as difficult as possible". Banging Head
Rant over, sorry. Got everything I need now, hopefully do the work in the next week or so.

Funny how castrol says the shelf life of diff' oil is 2 years, but LR say it can stay in the diff' for 10. Rolling with laughter
