Disco 4 SDV6 gearbox prob
Hello! Newbie here with auto gearbox issue. Not sure how to fix (torque converter replacement or gearbox overhaul) so all input will be gratefully received!
OK, here goes! 2011 Discovery 4 3.0L SDV6, 6 speed ZF auto gearbox. 45k miles.
Gearbox Oil and sump pan/filter replaced 1,000 miles ago with Landrover parts. New battery fitted recently (LR part).
For a while now, when cold (when the automatic lock up for the torque converter is disabled?) there’s a huge clunk going from 1st into 2nd.
It was then fine once the engine had warmed up, with smooth changes.
Then today, after 80 miles of driving normally the message ‘gearbox warning’ came up ... then at a constant speed, the revs went up and down just like a slipping clutch when I tried to accelerate or pull away.
I just made it to a fuel stop. Switched the engine off. 5 minutes later the engine was started and the warning had gone away.
So I used Command Shift (manual gear selection and manual up/down gear change).
I drove slowly and this got us to Perth fine. 120 miles.
On the way back North I carried on driving using Command Shift and accelerated up a hill (hard) and the gearbox warning came up and the engine was stuck in one gear revving hard.
I pulled over, stopped the engine, restarted and got the 110 miles to Skye using Command Shift without a problem.
Sooo, the problem occurs using the auto gearbox normally or accelerating hard using Command Shift.

Are you certain the correct oil has been put in?It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Even though you say Land Rover Parts it sounds suspiciously like the wrong oil has been used or the level is so low that the oil is overheating causing both the warning and drive problems? As M3DPO says.

Thanks for replies. Much appreciated.
Fault codes being read hopefully Monday.
Will double check oil spec and level. Garage owner trusted and he specifically ordered the auto gearbox oil as a Landrover part from a Landrover dealer for my vehicle .... and showed me the bottles.

Oil change was a precaution as the vehicle was quite new to me.

Here’s what the very helpful Ashcroft Transmissions folk say:
Hi p2704 clutch element E is definitely a bushing issue, this is one of the most common issues we see. Normally vehicle drives ok from cold and then starts to slip as the Transmission oil gets hot after approx twenty miles in gears 4 through to six which is when this clutch element is applied .
The only way for us to fix this issue for you is to recondition the transmission .We can either have the complete vehicle here or the transmission sent down to us separately .
Fitted transmission in house :- £2450 +vat 24 month warranty
Loose transmission :-£2100 +vat 12 month warranty this will incur a delivery charge approx £ 70 each way
