Sorry Pete ... Hijacked your thread. But at some point we'll get a technical response from someone 😀.

When this happens what is showing in the dash, D or N? Ignore the display beside the lever, that just tells you where the lever is, not what the gearbox thinks it's doing.

Does this happen without zip ties holding the cable in place?

Pete K, i think am experiencing same problem. Drive (say 3rd gear) put your foot of the acceleration car rolls till almost stop then you press acceleration it takes some time till gearbox reacts and engages 1st to give power.
is that your case?

Check to see if your selector pivot linkage is seized/seizing up and stopping it fully going into gear, wants greasing annually.
I have had it on a merc where after approx 1 mile it would loose drive, switch it off wait a minute or two and away it would go again, turned out it was the filter blocking up from all the debris and starving the box of oil, 1400 quid later fixed, 3 wks later car written off due to shunt!

Zip ties worked wonders, right up until the engine decided it had had enough of life.

Display is showing D.
Usually I will use the manual selector, and it will be stuck in 6.
Eventually, after a few seconds, I will be able to select 3rd or something.
Last week I was almost stationary, and when I pressed the throttle the engine just reved with no drive, I selected N and then back to D and I got drive.
Linkage with lubricated a few months ago.
Doesn't sound exactly the same as yours KostasA, but I know what you mean on another car.
