I remember rebuilding engines in the long and distant past. Would it be straight forward on the d3 if you could get the parts

Don't forget that forum sponsors, Advanced Factors, offer a good range of essential parts.

If you've done an engine rebuild before, then this won't throw any problems as the engineering is not radical to previous engines.
The problem would have been the crank trigger ring - but even that is simple as there is now an alternative (but much cheaper) tool available for its installation.

What roughly would be the total cost to take out rebuild and put back ? The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

Quote:What roughly would be the total cost to take out rebuild and put back ?
As a precautionary rebuild, or after an engine failure, and if so of what nature?
Timescale comes into it too; I have had three engines rebuilt, 3,500 cc V8 MG, 3,800 cc straight 6 Jaguar & 1,800 cc MGB. In each case the cost was considerably lower for a relaxed build time, two took c 8 weeks & one c. 3 weeks.

My COMPLETE engine rebuild including a genuine LR crankshaft and rebuilt heads, just parts came to about £1100 and that was after producing a schedule of parts against suppliers and getting as many quotes as possible and logging them and finally deciding on who supplied what dependant on quality. I only used genuine or OEM parts.
The result was a virtually new engine, albeit with modified & improved LR tabbed bearings as used in later 3.0 D4's.
As a result, i used quite a few suppliers. If i had only used one or two suppliers for the same parts, it would have cost 50 -75% more - so there is value in shopping around.
It did take a couple of months as i took my time to shop around and rebuilt the engine in a leisurely and correct manner - checking as many times as i thought necessary.
You would be surprised at the variation in prices for the same part from the same manufacturer but from different suppliers - to the point where sometimes it is daylight robbery.

I was thinking precautionary if I was going to keep the car (Which I am) I don't really need the car as I can use others and I have a car for my job. I would be tempted as I can choose when and where and actually drive it to its destination. Its had a new gearbox and lots of other new parts so why not an engine rebuild ? A rough price for the whole shooting match would be handy to know. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
