Rang another local garage in Hughenden - said last twin turbo (mines single) cost £7-8k to fix!

Although he said that included new EGR valves and other damage to engine, anywhay they are "pricing it up now" Rolling Eyes

He also said replacing turbo is impossible without lifting body which I now know is not true!

So last week I rang couple of garages - local LR specialists (recommended from Jollybodger who is also from my home town) Asked for an estimate for straight turbo supply and fit swap.

One who told me last job was £7-8k didnt getback to me.

The other priced it at £1.8k for straight turbo swap and oil change (and would also check engine fully for any other faults first). Risborough 4x4 (now Risborough Services)

So It's now under diagnostics with Risborough 4x4 (so fingers crossed!) Belize Green

Latest update in this saga. Sad

New garage have examined it and can hear knocking (in what appears to be the bottom side of engine).

I could hear this knocking and mentioned it to last garage who said they couldn't - just normal diesel sound!

Could mean engine is "knackered" but told me they wont know until they strip it down, and if I just did the turbo the crank could fail within a couple of thousand miles. This engine is pretty new so hopefully they can just polish the crank and do whats needed to fix this engine etc. but he had to give me worst case senarios.

A reconditioned engine (recent priced up job they did - was £5k - that's without the turbo), then new cambelt, turbo and new coolant pipes (damaged by oil). Big Cry

LATEST UPDATE

In case anyone has he misfortune to follow in my footsteps will update the end result.

The garage have had the car for well over 2 months. (as their LR engine expert/specialist was racing cars).

Car/engine stripped and and crank sent to the specialist and came back fine.

Specialist spoke to me and I suggested he do a pressure test on engine.

Looks like there is an issue with at least one cylinder and scoring inside.

Means that likely the somehow perhaps related to turbo fail the engine ran dry when it conked out.

I still cannot believe the car would gave zero warning of this (apart from when missus continued to drive it while it burned all the oil and smoked - which she obviously ignored and never mentioned) but in terms of oil pressure or even the CEF lights even she would have noticed this but they never came on!

So now engine is going to be sent off to have cylinders re-bored, and four new pistons ordered at 85 quid a pop. Then engine will be rebuilt with new bearings, gaskets, etc..

All this work including the new turbo and cambelt will be - £5k Shocked

Which considering a new turbo on it's own at start was being quoted at £4k spose it's "ok" and better I get this done properly Rolling Eyes Just wish I'd bought an HSE and higher spec model!

Risborough 4x4 did the turbo in our car, did a good job too. They see so many Discos that although they're not an 'official' Land Rover specialist they may as well be... The head guy runs/manages an Aston Martin racing team so is away a lot but he is their best diagnostician. Anthony is a good guy...

Our turbo oil seal failed and dumped all the oil through the engine on a trip back from Shrewsbury. I only realised because, despite the smoke, when I started it the next time the tappets didn't go quiet like they normally did, but there was no oil level or pressure warning. It took 5 litres of oil to get it back to the top of the dipstick!!

I guess we were 'lucky' a turbo was all we needed...

An expensive repair Big Cry
My brother works for a municipal equipment hire company where the owner runs a D4. One of their "technicians" serviced the boss's Disco and over filled it with oil by about 2-3 litres. One wrecked D4 Sdv6 engine later, which local indy has quoted £8k to replace. Wouldnt fancy owning up to that error Shocked

Hi Guilefox,

I was in the garage today and heard of your woes, I'm sorry to hear it wasn't straightforward, sounds like the boss let you down a bit but hopefully it should be back with you soon, I know Anthony's gutted.

Mine has just suddenly gone, no warning. Lots of crap out of the exhaust and engine overran for about 4 seconds. Couldn't hear anything from the engine. Am I looking at turbo or a new engine?

unfortunately a replacement engine. Can you use an engine from a 54 plate in a 07 plate TDV6? I still have my old D3

I'm surprised a 4 second over run needs a new engine. But i guess these aren't strong engines!

Yes you can. THere are differences, e.g fueling. I guess Mike can suggest the best way to achieve that
