Exhaust cross over pipe

idiots question here that someone mite be able to answer for me.

how can you tell if the exhaust cross over pipe is leaking/blowing.

my symptoms are as follows not a large amount of black smoke but enough to see under acceleration and a sucking noise from the front/underside.
intercooler hose's replaced with silicon hose's this happen since, have got under car to see if any soot marks and have hands up and around feeling for a blow.
not check my intercooler yet as a possible.

On mine there was a lot of soot around the turbo area and I could feel a bit of a blow, I also had exhaust gasses coming up in engine bay with bonnet open. I'm not convinced it's actually the cross over even though mine is nearly off, I think it may have been the egr valve link pipe from the manifold. However my crossover pipe brackets are missing as is most of the lagging so it's coming off to be replaced with one of my home upgraded ones. Thumbs Up

I had same issue after replacing w/ silicon (whooshing from pass side). The small rubber hose should not be replaced w/ silicon without these.... T-bolt clamps.

I found the only problem 'join' was on the turbo ... The other 5 'joins' seem fine with worm style clamps ... But I would change both on the small hose while you are in there. They can be retro-fitted without moving steel pipe.

Nb noted others here using screwdrivers to tighten worm clamps.... 7mm sochet. Thumbs Up

I think mine is split..... I am getting a 'rasping' noise under acceleration that sounds like a piece of paper in spokes of a wheel. No other symptoms of smoke etc.... and only when revved above 3k rpm.

I was hoping it wasn't the cross over pipe as I understand its a gearbox out job??

Certainly beyond my capabilities on the driveway.

I'm watching this article with interest.... definitely the solution that 'Discomadness' has of repairing with a modified version Thumbs Up

I'm a very experienced mechanic and I can honestly say it's not an easy job. If you have any nuts rounded like mine then your in a whole world of trouble. I've just bought a dremmel to gently grind the nuts off. I'll hopefully have some pics up this weekend of what I'm planning to do. Thumbs Up

If you go for diy on the cross over pipe, there's a diy how to on here somewhere. I would advise on top of that to remove the downpipe as it makes access a bit easier. The small intercooler pipe becomes quite accessible once you strip the egr valve and cooler off and the heatshields on the turbo side. Surprisingly you don't need that many tools. Iirc 8mm and 13mm sockets and spanners, hose clip remover, etc.

Not sure how long ago you did the hoses but if not done tight can loosen up over a month or so - worth trying to eliminate the turbo boost side first ... Hose clamps oil around the Intercooler ... Are you getting any codes?
