Was my car safe to drive? |
|
Called the AA out last week. My D3 suspension dropped to the floor, speedo stopped working and both traction control and ABS faults up on dash.
AA didnt have a clue what it was (which i now know was a speed sensor) and told me it was safe to drive to a garage.
Well im sure most of you have driven your D3 with the suspension in access mode, its fun, but surely my D3 wasnt safe to drive with all those faults?
I've got that AA garage parts and labour cover which has been a life saver but on this occasion they wouldnt pay out because the garage claimed the wheel bearing cause damage to the speed sensor and because the wheel bearing was still under warranty (was replaced just 8 months previously by the AA cover).
The wheel bearing was fine (the garage tried to con me but thats another story), the sensor had just failed. I was furious with the AA for telling me the car was safe to drive.

Well you don't need ABS or traction control and with the suspension lowered you probably drove at a slow speed with adequate handling. So perhaps it was safe? Simon.

ABS and Traction control still work even if you've got a wheel speed sensor not working. You've also got full foundation brakes which will work even if there's no electrical power, you'll just have to press the pedal harder.
As for driving on the bumpstops, as said, you'll be slower because it's uncomfortable, but it's safe to drive short distances at low speeds.
The issue arises if you are still driving at normal speeds and expect your car to behave the same way.

well it wasnt too bad, was bouncing around which was fun but just wanted to confirm that the ABS etc would still have functioned. It was a 12 mile journey on a dual carrageway.
Anyway, car is fixed.
