So, just a quick update, the line the dealer came up with was , you can remove the winch (remains of) without dropping the DEF tank.
Thanks to everyone for their responses and help, really appreciate it, lesson learnt and an expensive one too.1970 RRC

you cant fit a spacesaver to a MY16 with DEF tank. Its a full sized spare fitted the opposite way round to D3 or earlier D4, its face down.
Uncle rays protector is therefore different, but still needed by the sound of it. (I have one on mine)

Damn - I'm a LR Disco 4 newbie, and had hoped the cover on my MY16 spare wheel was adequate protection... but reading this thread, clearly not
So, if I go for protection rather than cure, what do I need to get and how much will it cost me? and how common is this type of theft??

the platic cover on your MY16 D4 is no protection at all, its PLASTIC. send a PM to uncle ray and get a price - not megabucks but will save you losing your spare wheel

Suspect that the MY 2016 are being more specifically chosen because the scumbags now know they will always have full size spares.
Warning for those in the Nuneaton, Bedworth, North Warks areas, I was out for a run the other day when something caught my eye in the ditch at the side of the road: 6 of the MY 2016 spare wheel plastic covers dumped there. Interestingly they weren't damaged, evidently they don't even need to break them to get to the cable and cut it.
I guess they don't leave them behind so that the poor unsuspecting owners cannot pinpoint exactly when or where their spare wheels actually disappeared.
still not sure how common these wheel thefts are though....

cars with adblue tank on the spare goes FACE DOWN...so only a full size spare will fit...which means you need the new style uncle ray....
also not wise to leave a detachable TOW BAR on as they nick them for a pastime.

Common enough for us to have a special Discovery car park in work in front of security. And I work for JLR.
