Dear Collective mind,
I have a Disco 4 3.0 TDV6. Noticed a ‘fume’ smell when getting out of the drivers door. Nothing inside the cabin. Work done recently includes both Inlet manifolds; I’ve checked the injectors and no carbon build up and no sign of a new failure. Just had the body off and cross over pipe and both EGR exhaust to inlet pipes changed for Landrover Genuine parts (this was my thought of what it could be). My question now is, does the Disco just smell a bit overall 😂. As the days are getting colder, I can’t see any obvious exhaust gases coming from where they shouldn’t. It smells pretty noxious, so any pointers on how I could check for leaks on the exhaust system that’s after the EGR valves would be appreciated. I don’t have a smoke machine to hand.

Did the smell coincide with the colder weather? If so, could well be the FBH exhaust smell, obviously there isn't a load of emissions equipment on the FBH and it's burning diesel with the exhaust coming out near the passenger side whee arch.
When I first started up the car this morning in -3 degrees, the smoke from the FBH firing up was drifting across to the driver's side of the car as I was scraping the windows and yeah it's pretty smelly particularly if it's just started up or it's not firing properly / needs a bit of a service.
I find that the engine exhaust fumes from the D4 (with DPF) is far less smelly than my D3 which has no DPF (and both EGRs blanked). Yours being a D4, I wouldn't expect the exhaust fumes to be particularly strong smelling.

Hi Chris,
Not really. The FBH trundles away nicely and fires up well and did so this morning. I noticed it in the autumn (15°c) when we were transporting someone on the tailgate, setting out water points for a race. The person on the tail gate said they felt like they were being gassed. Whilst I know the tailpipes are at the back, I noticed the smell whenever I got out of the car by my door. Hence why I thought it might be the EGR to exhaust manifold pipes, which are prone to going on the D4. The EGR is different to the ones on the YouTube videos, as mine is a 14 plate 3.0L version. I’m wondering if there is another pipe after the exhaust manifold (as that was checked), or another part that I could check for damage or a hole.
