How can I tell if the cambelt has been replaced |
|
Hi all,
New to this so please bear with me.
Going to look at a few D3 HSE tomorrow, 2007, 84K miles, no cambelt change and a 2009, 107K miles, and apparently they have changed the cambelt themselves at a very small independent trader.... which bothers me.
Is there any way I can check if its a new cambelt and would I be better going for a 2007 at 84K miles or 2009 at 107K miles?
Any help and advise appreciated.

That age of car would be quite likely to need an oil pump too.
If the oil pump is the newer, stronger variety, then the belt will have been removed to fit the pump and hence almost certainly replaced with a new one. Not sure how you can tell though without removing the belt covers...
If it has had a new belt, but still the old pump, walk away.
If it hasn't had a new belt or pump, you can do some serious bargaining New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

2007 models require the oil pump changing too, with additional cost of the pump and labour and getting it to seal correctly.
As for which one, can't really judge on "paper", look at the cars themselves

Cam belt should be changed after 7 years or circa 100k so should have been done by 2014 in the 2007 motor regardless of the mileage covered.

Hi,
as said each has to be taken on its own merits, but if the 2007 has Not had the belts done what else have they Not done that should have been done on time
Proof of any work done needs to be inspected to confirm not just a "mates receipt" stamp in the book
have a search on here to get an idea what could have needed replacing by now and how much it would cost, anything that has not been done deduct the amount for "potential" cost it may mean the deal is not worth doing
you could easily spend £2K catching up with work rather than buying a well maintained D3 that seemed dearer to buy

I bought my 56 plate in April, loads of receipts for scheduled service and ad hoc replacement parts as required. However no documentation of belts being done, so negotiated belt replacement and whilst it was in bits, new oil pump, tensioners, seal and bolt. The indie didn't say or comment about the state of the belt being taken off. Piece of mind in having it done and the oil pump was the updated one from AF factors.

Thanks everyone, really useful help, especially the oil pump. Think I will take it as it comes and just be super careful and not rush to buy it because it looks shiny

While you are at it check that the brake flexible hoses have been replaced. Should have been done every 6 years. Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

You will find a lot haven't had belt changes.
Either due to not knowing or cost.

Having an07 plate d3 from new in addition to the brake hoses I would check the following
Sump for corrosion
Rear brake pipes for corrosion
Oil/diesel leaks
Arb buses front and back
Front top ball joints for wear.
Front hubs for play/noise
Front lower spending arms for knocking under breaking.
Battery condition
Alternator for output
Centre bearing on rear prop shaft for condition
Track rods and track rod ends for excessive play.
Air condition system for leaks.
That all oils were changed at 10 years!
This is only for starters . Don't you just lover Land Rovers. Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.
