Brake hoses

So my D4 is now 7 years young and apparently needs the brake hoses replacing according to LR.

They look fine though and the vehicle has mainly done motorway miles. A recent MOT has not highlighted any brake line problems so the question is, whether to just get on with it or let sleeping dogs lie?

I consider brakes & tyres to be VERY important.

For me it would be a "no brainer" & I would replace brake hoses & fluid @ 7 years as recommended by JLR.

I would also replace them when recommended by a decent mechanic, even if less than 7 years since last changed.

It wasn't mentioned on my 7 year service (or MOT), however, my current MOT does have corroded brake pipes listed as an advisory.

My independent told me to ignore them for now as they were still perfectly serviceable and to be honest the brakes have always been rubbish, so I doubt I would notice a difference if the pipes dropped off!

Item 35 on the D3 service schedule here:-

http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...0miles.pdf

indicates that all flexible brake hoses should be replaced every 6 years.

If you were involved in an accident failing to replace them could have repercussions.

So why, if it is so critical, do you have to ask the dealers to do them?
- just the same with brake fluid changes

Mine lasted about 11 years before NEEDING changed

Really, they should have been done the year previous, but never once had they been picked up on an MOT...

I'm firmly in the roughly 10 years or by visual inspection beforehand if required. And of he disco's I've had previous always replaced with Goodrich stainless ones. Not sure if they are available for a D3 though ? I'd love to know what a stealer would charge to replace the hoses and fluid. Laughing

Did mine at 8 years but should have done sooner. It's the deterioration under the metal cubes at end of the flexi pipe that you cannot see that's the problem. I think someone posted a picture way back.

mine were done way before the schedule

the indie i used suggested new ones on as the existing were very corroded ...
possibly coming up for second set.

I booked mine in at JLR along with other work and they said they didn't need doing and just sprayed them to get them to last a bit longer. They did put them as an advisory on the MOT last week though.

I'll get another year out of mine easily. Thumbs Up

I wonder whether we are getting confused between flexible brake hoses, which should be replaced every 6 years, and the solid metal brake pipes which should be inspected periodically, as well as at MoT time and replaced when necessary?

It was the flexi pipe ends on mine. Rear steel pipes replaced as well. However, it was probably the metal collar at the end of the flexi's that hid the corrosion.
