Tyre life

I have a set of Goodyear Wranglers on my D4 and have done 25, 400 since having them fitted.
I intend to drive to Poland in November and as usual the weather will be pretty grim, snow and ice etc.
By then I will have done roughly 30.000 miles.
From UK to Poland and back I reckon on doing around another 3,000 miles.
So to do the trip with tyre wear of 30,000 and add another 3,000 will I be skating on ice or would it be a good idea to get the car re-shod before I go ?
Has anybody got any idea of the safe life of such tyres before they start to get punctures ?

You can get a puncture on a new tyre
Look on the sidewall you will see little arrow or twi (tread wear indicator) look across the tread and you will see raised bits of rubber if these are level with the tread you are on the limit and they need changing
I would say if you have done 25k already on them it would be better to change, new tyres offer better grip and shift water better

If you are expecting snow & ice you really need 4mm of tread minimum whilst you are there. So check how much you have left now and extrapolate the wear rate. I think new tyres have about 10mm but stand to be corrected. I usually change mine at the 3 to 4mm mark, not down to the tread wear indicator which is the legal minimum

New Wranglers have 8mm tread. If you've done 25000 miles on a set that's pretty good going. I'd run them until just before you go in November then get a new set.

Thumbs Up

+1. Thumbs Up Or a set of proper winters for that trip and the rest of the winter, keeping a lookout for a second set of rims for "summer" tyres. You can never have enough sets. Mr. Green

Just checked the little 'Bridge' between the tread and it looks to the Mk 1 eye that I have about 4mm of tread above it so all good so far.
Whenever I change my tyres the garage always tells me to keep one as a spare as they 'Don't like to throw tyres with so much tread left away' so it looks as if I am always erring on the good side so a re-tread all round might be the answer.
Thanks for the answers, I was almost sure but needed that little nudge to make me make my mind up.

See what condition they are in a month before you go and decide if replacement is needed.
working it out mathematically 3000 miles you should burn, 0.8mm of the tyres.
I achieved 30,000 out of wranglers with 8mm from new so I worked it out off that. Laughing

My local garage always does me a good deal regardless of what I get.
They specialise in off road tyres so have, or can get, any make I need.
They have recently taken on Falken and they look good so may consider them when the time comes.
