What would you do?
Hello
My 06 Discovery 3 has just been diagnosed with a broken crank shaft. It's done 149,000 miles. For the last 5-6 years it was serviced by a main dealer.
I have just spoken to Landrover customer service and they've said that they would make a 50% contribution towards the repair but I'd need to have the car diagnosed by a main dealer first. Currently diagnosed by an indi. Apparently the pulleys wobble and you can see that the crank shaft doesn't move via the oil filler cap.
At c£12k for a replacement engine I'd be looking at £6k + diagnosis + whatever else needs doing. So if I'm lucky £6.5k.
So, given that the disco only be worth about £6k(?) if full working order, what would you do?
It's a Metropolis so HSE spec ++

Spending 6k to get a car worth 6k is pointless. Break it for scrap. It's worth quite a lot as parts.____

What's it worth now as it is?
If you pay £6k to fix are you keeping it long term? If so then worth it perhaps, alternative a second hand engine but still going to cost as much I reckon2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Sorry to hear that.
Excuse my ignorance (i've only had mine 4 months so still getting to know the TDV6). But, how does the indie see the crank through the oil filler? Does he mean the crank shaft pully is wobbling? What happened when it failed, i take it the engine has seized?
Can these engines have the bottom end stripped with a new / re-ground crank & shells etc providing no other damage?

I guess if the garage turn it over with the starter (rear of engine) and the cams aren't going round, it's either the crank broken or cambelt it's driving the cams.
If its had a new/recon gearbox, then with a new engine, you would hope it would keep going for a good few years.
I guess it really comes down to whether you have the £ to replace the car with a newer model.

That's a difficult one, at least my financial choice was an easy one and she was scrapped. Just beware of the phrase "I've spent so much, I've got to keep on going". If it was me I'd be scrapping it, there are too many parts just waiting to pack up just when you think all is well. SWMBO says replace the engine if the car hasn't been abused like mine was. Tough choice.
Just don't scrap it too soon, I'm still trying to flog my bits!!

6k is a lor of money, BUT what would you get instead that will have a main dealer installed brand new engine with a years warranty?
06 metropolis will be worth more than 6k even with them miles and the new engine will make it easy to sell in the future.
On the other hand as the metropolis has so much bling/toys you might be surprised what its worth as parts.

The other thing to think about is how much it is worth to you. If you fake that £6k and buy another then you won't necessarily know what you are buying, whereas yours is a known quantity. So if I were in your shoes my choice would be this. If I was going to buy another D3 for 6-8k and the one you have is tip top then repair it. If you are going to put 20k into something newer then do that...

Personally, having been through a similar dilemma recently, I concluded that the idea that 'if the car is worth 6k then spending 6k on it is pointless' is spurious. Ultimately, if you scrapped the car what would you do? (i.e. it's the cost to change that you need to consider).
i.e. if the answer is 'spend £20k on another newer Dx' then arguably you're better off spending the 6k to repair the one you already have (if you're happy with it). That's what I'd do...-------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks everyone.
It's a difficult choice because so far this year i've replaced all 4 tyres, the alternator, rear discs and pads, front pads, battery and transfer box. I figure that a new engine means all that is left is the gearbox and it's practically a new car.
However, it's let me down on 2 out of 5 foreign holidays and had to be repatriated. The last time, this year, it was returned to be on a lorry with 4 other discos, a freeloader and a RRS. Apparently the driver was on his way back to France to pick up another disco. My family has lost confidence in it now.
Been offered £2k which seems reasonable so she'll be scrapped. Shame really, such a waste and I love the car but it's now time for something more reliable. Was considering a D4 or even the new disco but having spoken to a respected local indy he reckons that Land Rover have got the servicing intervals all wrong. Says the disco needs servicing every 6-7k miles to keep them tip top.

It seems the sensible option. I know how you feel but to me keeping it is just throwing good money after bad. Re service intervals, mine had its oil changed every 7 - 8k in later life, engine still packed up. I've got 2 more years WD warranty on the D4, then hopefully then another 3 years, after that it's gone. I'm not making the mistake of hanging onto her too long like I did with my D3.
You just know that even with LR offering to pay half, your "half" will get bigger and bigger as the job progresses......silly not to do the Turbo at the same time etc etc etc. ------------------------------

Do you have the time/energy/space to do a DiscoDunc style strip down and flog off that parts? You could probably treble or quadruple that £2k, and it will keep you out of trouble for a few weeks. You'd need to check on the legality of doing that, ISTR it's changed since DD started that epic journey.

I'd be breaking it as easily more than £2k of parts on it.
I know space can be an issue and you may not be able to fully strip it to bare bones but there's easily £2k in 'easily removed bits' without it being down to a useless lump of metal. (seats £500, wheels and tyres £300, gearbox £500, engine ancillaries few £100, grille, lights, cat', exhaust, steps, etc. etc.???)
I'd consider taking the blingy and easy to remove/sell bits (maybe even getting some cheap 'well used' 'slave' wheels to keep it as a rolling shell).
You'd still be able to sell the rolling shell, even well stripped, for a sum of money and if you strip enough off it to make it not worth a lot may still be worth then paying somebody to collect the dregs?
You will still need a garage or decent car-port to do the above.
I've done it on a few of cars over the years; offered a few hundred scrap but relieved it of a grand or more in bits then sold 'rolling shell' for £50 or so to local scrap merchant.
I accept new "recycling" processes may now make latter part more difficult

There is a not quite so squeaky clean method of getting it off the DVLA books, says it's exported. Not condoning this but just saying.
I got prob £1,800 of parts from my D3 with a few hours and not a lot of care. With care and time, and not having driven for 4 days solid and 5 days more driving in front of me, you should be able to easily get a good few times that. I found it strangely therapeutic but made the mistake of closing the lower tailgate after I stripped out the fuse boxes!!
Gratuitious pic of D3 parts in D4 with all my camping gear.

PS You'll also have the luxury of time and able to ask "how do I ......... ?" here. I had that but no real time and no ability to get specialist tools or bits.
