Help & advice following failure after dealer service |
|
We collectrd our disco this morning after a major service including a cam belt change, it's only done 60,000 but due to age that's what we were told it needed. Car had been cleaned and looked immaculate and drove home about 8 miles, all was fine, as the MOT is due on Monday, (dealer failed to note this and didn't offer to do it) I went straight to our local MOT station. While they were driving it in to start the test it made an awful noise and they stopped the engine immediately, water was pouring onto the ground and when we looked under the bonnet, the belt had flown of, taking the fan blades with it and on closer inspection the water pump had come completely off!
So my question, is the pump disturbed during a timing belt change, if not it seems too much of a coincidence not to be connected?
I called the dealer and they made no comment apart from arranging to have it collected on Monday.
I need to add that it has full service history and has had no issues since new.

Not directly no, but one of the bolts that hold the cambelt cover on is almost next to the top water pump bolt. it is common knowledge on the forum due to many posts that whats happened to this is nothing strange after having a belt change.
A lot of members have posted the same fault before about the pump shearing off the other two bolts if the top one is missing or left slack, they are only small 8 mm head with a 6mm shank.

Thanks for the reply Flack.I guess I am going to have to argue this with the dealer, I would rather take it somewhere else as I don't trust them now!

Help & advice following failure after dealer service.
Title of your thread says it all. If the problem wasn't there before the dealer got it then throw it back at them. Do not under any circumstances listen to the total verbal diarrhea offered by the Service Advisors. They are told what to say and unless you get a good and moral one (of which to be fair there are many), you will be palmed off with the party line. You could come away thinking it was your fault!!
We are fortunate to have expert knowledge on this forum and you have been given some insight so hold your ground.

Dealer called having inspected the car and admitted it was their fault and volunteered the reason as Flack had suggested! Pleased with their straight forward honesty.

Nice one and good to hear of dealer being upfront and honest. Always easy to criticise garages so respect and praise a good thing to see. Never argue with a stupid person.....they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
