manufacturing - LR Roofracks, ladders, Spot mounts etc
Hi everyone,
Just looking for a bit of advice please... Ive recently got back into a D4 having had a D3 several years ago, I love it to pieces and have spent a small fortune on it since purchase... Love every bit...
Some of the kit (heated wheel, flappy paddles, gsm FBH switch, etc) I did with reasonable prices, other kit - roof rack (over £1k) and the spot light mounts (over £100) were ridiculously expensive and to be fair cost me even more as i drilled into my aircon radiator at the same time!! lol
This is where Im at now... I have full access to one of the largest engineering companys in the UK - in essence this means i can make anything from srcatch.... and potentially knock out 1000's of them easily...
Im thinking roofracks, sump guards, spotlight mounts, rear ladder etc etc. In fact, anything...
Obviously if this progressed beyond this post ill be speaking with Martin re site sponsor but does anyone who has experience in this area (long term users of this site maybe) think this would be worth it? Obviously could make the above for brand new LR's as well as established ones... To get them made and sell at a fair price would need to sell a few...
Any help would be greatly appreciated but i just think the current pricing (especially the spot mounts) are a joke and want to make it reasonable...
Thanks,
Dan2011 Discovery 4 HSE

Hey Dan, there's a market out there for sure, personally, I'd start small batches, maybe via a "group buy" type thread on here (after talking it through with the boss )
Mass production is a nice dream, but establish the "brand" first, have a look on here at some post from other sponsors, not doing them down, but I don't think the post over sliders etc really took off, cost vs value for a quality product is your issue
Small parts like spot mounts I think would do well, I made my own bracket as a few others have Altox GSM FBH controller thread
IID Pro MV License - D3, D4 & RRS - Enabling, Updates, D4 & RRS Timed / Remote Climate, D4 Bluetooth fitting

As someone else pointed out to me not long back...
D3's are about to enter the price point where the overlander/offroader, looking to spend about £5-6,000 on a vehicle to prepare - used to be looking at D2's will soon be looking at D3's.
So I actually believe it is a growing market as time goes by.
As it stands today vehicles as prepared as mine are extremely rare in a D3/D4 but you would be hard put to find a D1 that is still standard and not far behind for a D2.
Leap forward a year or two and people buying D3's for under £5,000 and then knocking them about will be commonplace. You could see the make up of the userss on this site change also.

Also...
If you make a "swing away" spare wheel mount and a g4 look-a-like roof rack first. I will be your biggest fan D3 07 SE - still going strong

You made it back from Europe then?
Not yet... Here until mid feb... Drove over without aircon but my colleague brought over a new aircon radiator for me... had it fitted - everything back to normal now after my awesome drilling skills of the spot brackets!!
This was Hintertux about an hour ago - first play with the AT3's... they were awesome.
This was the roof rack i ended up with... cheaper but a nightmare to fit, way too heavy and doesnt look too good... and over engineered... On the plus side i can easily get 6 snowboard bags on there
I originally put an LED bar on also but after fitting the lazer spots there was no need so took it off.
Going by my experience of corrosion issues with a genuine ladder I would add that quality sells. Especially for repeat purchases.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.
Hey ... How about a symmetrical rear door for a D5 ? 😀.

Another one for swing away carriers or even a bumper with integrated carrier mounts.
Like a Kaymar bumper without the £2000+ price.
Most I’ve seen are £900+ for a carrier.
Cheaper ones look like something Stevie Wonder made up and have the quality to match.
