D4 Landmark - Compomotive 18" Wheels or smaller + spacers
I'm delighted with my Landmark, but in rural Hampshire where the potholes grow every day, I find the ride unacceptably harsh. It's currently on 20" wheels shod with Pirelli Zeros
It has been suggested that the ride could be improved by decreasing tyre pressures all round by 2 psi. -That certainly improves things, but nowhere as much as I would like.
Question by how much can I reduce the recommended tyre pressures without compromising Safety and/or Tyre life ?
Second question what are the smallest wheels I can fit in place of the 20" ones.
Everyone agrees 19" are OK, and it's suggested if one wants to go smaller the choice is either the 18" Compomotive PD1881, or an ordinary JLR 18" wheel & spacers.
In which case can anyone confirm the size of spacers needed. I'd like to fit 285/60/18 General Grabber AT3s which AJS have in stock at £155.15 but understand that this wheel/tyre combination will probably not fit in the spare wheel aperture. If this is the case I will probably go for the same wheels with a slightly lower aspect ratio tyre for the spare only, does anyone know if 255 60 18 might fit ?
Interestingly the Land Rover tyre pressure data-plate fixed to the trailing edge of the driver's door on my Landmark appear to infer that wheels & tyres between 235/70/R17 & 255/50/R20 could be fitted:-

I've just looked at my tyre calc app, and I have 275/45x21's fitted, and one of these just squezes into the spare wheel space (its tight), and if you try and go with 285/60x18's they are bigger than my tyres by almost another 1 inch (30.7 Inches for mine, 31.5 for yours) so I would say one of these wouldnt fit.
I thought 255/50x18 was the standard tyre fitted to an 18" rim on the D3, so these would/should fit - if you didnt have the adblue tank, so not sure from that point of view

255/50x18 ? I thought I couldn't go below 19" unless I used spacers or Compomotive PD1881s.
Confused....

Was thinking of the that. They are the same rolling circumference as the D4 standard 255 55 19 so should be fine for D4 on Compmotives.

soory, my mistake, its 255/60x18 as standard (on D3), then 255/55x19 (D3&D4), then 255/50x20 (D4)

So far no one has commented on what spacers I would require to fit 18" wheels, other than Compomotives, to the D4.
Clearly they must be hubcentric but what thickness; and what's a 100% reliable brand please?

Is the wheel diameter limitation not due to the size of the brakes in which case spacers wont really help? the compomotive wheel is designed to clear the brakes by being wider on the inside than other 18" rims. I think although I might be totally wrong...
Spacers tend to be used to allow fitting of different offset wheels to clear the suspension struts.
The 17" wheels mentioned on the tyre pressure label would only apply to the 2.7L engine versions which IIRC had the smaller D3 brakes fitted.

Do the diesels D4's have a larger caliper than the US V8 4.4? Is it the same calipers as the US V8 5.0 or V6 SC?

Spacers are not needed for any of the tyre/wheel sizes listed on the label, they will all fit (using LR wheels) as long as the front brakes are not the V8 upgrade ones, in which case the smallest rim you can fit is the 18". Once you start going up in width it gets a bit more complicated, but 275 will definitely fit without modifications. Google 'tyre size calculator' and find out what your size will be equivalent to. As long as you stick to <3% difference in overall size you should be OK. Also remember that your speedo will be off too.

Seems a bit odd that LR have the standard tyre size sticker pictured on the car if sizes won't fit. I know it's right for D3 and presume D4 is the same.

I have just removed the 20" wheels from my D4 and fitted 18" compomotives for the very same reason. The roads around here are horrendous and as good as the 20s looked they were no match for our local roads
The ride on the 18s is a revelation but they have only been on a couple of hours
The sticker in the door probably covers all D4 models including the commercial like my neighbour has. That has a 2.7 engine, smaller brakes and 18" wheels as standard so maybe they were even available with 17"?
next door neighbour is similar to this one
