On investigating something dangling down from the rear differential I found to my surprise it wasn't a twig, but part of the heat shielded cable that runs to the rear diff oil temperature sensor - Yellow and Red wires.
Now I've been told this isn't a separately purchasable item, so I was wondering whether anyone on hear knows how this cable is normally routed so I can trace it back and find the other end then solder the ends together. According to the wiring diagram is goes from the Rear Differential Control Module to the Sensor, so if someone can tell me where I can find the control module I should be able to track back.
Bonus for me was that whilst investigating the dangling cable I also am likely to have found the cause of my MPG being carp at recently - a crushed lefthand exhaust pipe probably happen at the same time as the cable being snagged.

The left exhaust does not look like it would pass much at all. Over time this can damage the catalyst due to overheating (and thereby continuing the partial blockage, so check the codes) and it is worth giving the engine a good look too.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
Not done too many miles and easy driving since when this happened but yes well aware of the implications.
Good news is I just got hold of a replacement exhaust from a local breakers, so it'll be replace in the next few days. and I'm hoping to do the cable at the same time because with the exhaust out of the way it'll allow easier access to the other bits.
Cable route was easily identified once the exhaust was out of the way this morning.
It's supposed to be clipped to the diff near the socket then again higher up and about 200mm beyond that it joins a loom which then goes up into the junction/connection block that sits on the chassis rail above and to the left of the spare wheel when viewed from behind.
Both clips had somehow come loose from the heatshield protection around the cable allowing the cable to come loose and into contact with the driveshaft, which inturn snatched the cable and tore it off, at a point just before the cable joined the larger loom.
To my knowledge this cable/sensor is only there on active rear diffs, but I have spoken to another person who had the same happen to his, so it might be worth a visual check as I didn't get any warning messages, it was just pure chance I saw the cable end dangling down when walking towards the car.

I know this is about 3yrs old post but do you have any luck finding a replacement cable for the rear diff temp sensor?
I couldn't even remember this happen and had to reread the whole thread. No I don't believe I got a cable, just repaired original.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.
