| Driveway Gear Box oil level check/top up |
|
Hi is there an idiots guide to safely performing this task at home on the driveway? D3 2004 HSE
D2 1999 TD5 Auto GS - Sold

I do my auto box and diffs/transfer box levels on the driveway.
If you raise the suspension and then put a few axle stands under the chassis rails you should be safe. New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

1. You need the engine running. Run thru the gears slowly and back to P
2. Be aware of the gearbox temperature.
If it's too cold it will look like it needs topping up
If it's too hot it will flow out.
Usually a brief drive around the block is all that is required to get it warm enough.

Different I would have thought.
It doesn't use red fluid.
Quite sensitive to oil temperature

Do a search on here. They are guides to tell you how to change all the oils.

From experience: make sure you wear long sleeves and protective gloves. All of it is right next to the exhaust piping and it will get extremely hot since the engine must be running.
Basically, it's a real pain in the behind and I wouldn't ever want to do it again.

Get a pressure pump with an additional 30cm tube on it, to pump directly into the boxes filling hole Having one like that, You dont have to think about longsleeves.
If the motor is warm, You let the ATF drain from the drain plug.
By that time You completely clean and open the fill plug.
If done, You close the drain
First You can refill without running the motor.
If Oil starts to come out of filling hole, start motor and select everey gear for maybe 5 seconds do that twice,after that emmidiatly Switch off motor, (edit: to prevent the ATF to get hotter then needed,...around 30 to 40 deg C,...edit)
Refill again till it pores out
Do the shifting thing again an let motor run
If you have an IID-bt-Tool, You can lay under the Car and watch the temperature on Your own. In between 35 and 40degree Celcius Your allright, when You Top untill You drop.
Atleast thats how I did, more or less.
Effect, even on this first drain of my pseudo-flush was really good.
If You have a leveled ground and manage to park all wheels on wood or bricks of the same height ans putting car in offroad height makes it even more "fun" TDV6MY07-automatic-LHD-noDPF-iidbt-ffrrMod

Petrol is the same gearbox as diesel.
If you are only looking to check the level and not do a partial fluid change, do not undo the fill plug with the engine off. You'll have a large amount of fluid spilling out everywhere and little idea what level it was filled to beforehand. The reason the engine has to be running is that the gearbox takes up a significant portion of the fluid. The fill plug must be removed and replaced without turning off the engine.
Even with a pump, you must keep the engine running while you put the plug back in after filling, which means reaching around the exhaust piping, which at that point will be 150-250C. Trust me, wear long sleeves and gloves.

Im assuming what the man meant was you petrol guys have two downpipes, versus the 2.7 single pipe?

Yes. TDV6 has an exhaust pipe on the left side of the engine (from turbo)
Therefore no exhaust pipes near the level check plug.

Oh man, you diesel guys are lucky then. Should be a piece of cake aside from paying attention to the fluid temperature and the inevitable spillage (the fluid really smells terrible).
I would use a new plug as there is an integrated sealing washer just to be sure it doesn't leak afterwards.
