Drilling holes in a new number plate |
|
Maybe a stupid question, but is the best way high speed with a small diameter bit to make initial hole and then widen with the correct 4mm bit?
Only reason I ask is last time I did this many moons ago I cracked the bar steward plate

I've always melted the holes instead using a soldering iron to prevent cracking or future water damage inside the layers of the plate D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

I've always just dived straight in with the 4mm bit. Lay it flat on a wood offcut, make sure it's well secured as they have a tendency to lift, take it easy on a slow / medium speed and you should be fine... 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Thanks - TBH was thinking of heating a nail and using that (I don't possess a Soldering Iron)
I've remembered I've got a spare plate from eons ago so I'll practise on that

I've used the lay flat on a piece of wood, pilot hole, then larger hole method many times.
The only variation, which might well make absolutely no difference whatsoever, is that I put tape around the drilling point. Someone told me to that when I was 16 and fixing my moped number plate. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Was it one of those old "ceramic tile" numberplates? 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

I suspect it was more about not scratching the plate if I slipped with the hand powered drill. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

A bit 'off course' , but how do I get a hole in an INOX backplate for my license plates ?
I bought one with two holes, almost at each end. So I started to make one in the center,
to prevent some idiot from trying to start there..
The aluminium licenseplate was no issue, but the inox... I burned two HSS drills,
broke a 3mm cobalt doted drill and the 5mm cobalt drill goes nowhere...
Laser maybe ..

The tape I use is it would be far easier to pull off the no plates being held on with screws, having fitted hundreds of sets in the past would never fit with screws again.
