Using the Ford Territory ZF Transmission? |
|
Has anybody attempted to use the Ford Territory ZF transmission in a D3? Or perhaps swap parts from it (in particular the Torque Converter)? With the D3 getting pretty old and of low $ value I'm a bit reluctant to rush into $6000 for a full transmission overhaul. The Ford Territory (Australian model) has the 2.7TDV6 and ZF combo as was used in the D3, so seems logical there are common components which may be swapped. But hard to know as there are possible variations. Anybody looked into the same?

Have a look on AULRO or FORD forums as there is much discussion about the Ford developed copy of the ZF box. Apparently there are some parts that 'swap' but the Ford one was built by Ford with their own 'modifications'.
Optionally get a hold of the ZF parts and diagram and compare it with anything you can lay your hands on from Ford.
And Ford parts are cheaper as I discovered when I was to replace my catastrophically failed TDV6 LR engine with the Ford as used in Territorys here in Australia. The price then was LR, $13 000, compared with Ford, $7 000, for virtually the same components. LeighW
The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

When I previously asked about using a Jag gearbox, I was reminded to use the LandRover electronics unit

Had a nice chat with ZF South Africa last year when they did an oil service on the gearbox. Locally they can pretty much rebuild a 6HP26 for any vehicle except the Territory. The box needs to be sent to Germany for rebuild, then back to SA, then on to Australia for programming as apparently the software belongs to ZF Australia, then back to SA. They recon a week to rebuild any other box, minimum six weeks for the territory.
