Back to the garage?

Hi all,

Apologies if this is in the wrong section. I'm hoping to get some advice on my current car and whether or not I should be heading back to the dealer.

Now I'm not new to these machines, prior to my current car which is an 11 HSE in Orkney Grey, I had a 56 HSE in Buckingham Blue. I had that for almost 6 years and whilst I care not to know how many thousands I spent on suspension, brakes etc, apart from annual servicing and 2 EGR valves, I haven't got a bad word to say about the 2.7 TDV6 and auto transmission. 100% reliability from purchase to sale!

So moving on, there are a couple of things bugging me about this new one. I've read up alot about the transmission and the fact there is a delay between revving the car and actually pulling away. That I can live with. However, twice recently when reversing up a slope and also performing a hill start, I went to go and it was as if the car was in neutral. Certainly took me by surprise, I had to put it back into neutral then drive/reverse again to move.

Next up is the suspension. Twice now in the last fortnight, it has warned me that it's 'normal height only'. This happened on my Disco 3, and turned out to be a failing compressor!

I have to admit, perhaps I'm making an issue out of nothing? However, I've had the car for 5-6 weeks now and obviously need to take it back within 3 months I believe if there are any issues. I won't name the garage, but it is local dealer who has been trading for a good few decades.

Apologies in advance for the waffling, I do like to talk!

Thanks in advance!

First problem 'hesitation' is usually sorted by a software upgrade if it hasn't been done or at least a reset on the gearbox. second problem needs input from far more knowledgeable people....

my first D4 had a feature new one doesn't ...

6mm travel of brake pedal cut the revs to minimal. Spoke with receptionist at stealers and she explained it's a safety feature so if something has rolled under brake pedal and you're trying to brake, it stops you accelerating (and would presumably do some engine braking but I never tried it at speed).

several times I'd gone to pull out of junctions and b*gger all happened when I tried to accelerate, but armed with knowledge of this feature I had a look at my trainers ... black streak exactly where i'd been catching edge of brake pedal !!

i'd started looking at grinding part of the pedal off to improve gap between brake and accelerator ... search youtube for other who've done same ... but replacement car doesn't have that feature enabled, so haven't had to resort to it.

Thank you all for the inputs. Definitely some funny features these cars have!

Tonight the rear parking sensors have decided to join the list of funny goings on, whereby they are a solid tone when there is nothing behind.

The conclusion is that I shall be phoning the garage tomorrow to arrange it going back to them. It's still within warranty, so it makes sense to get these matters resolved now rather than wait until I have to pay for it.

The "normal height only" thing is I suspect a compressor that needs replaced. They did an earlier one and a later one, the later one being better, but I don't know when that changed. The only proviso to that is to ask if you've been raising and lowering the car a few times to make this happen. It does prevent overheating by refusing to play until things cool down by giving this message.

The hesitation thing never totally goes away. (They all do that sir.) You get used it but it can be annoying when, for example you want to accelerate out into traffic at a junction with a gap that seems just big enough, you give it some gas and it seems to think too long about it, you're committed and the gap is closing.... So although it can be improved, it never totally disappears.

As for the reversing sensors, can't help much there. I expect you will have checked for obstructions on the sensors.

Putting it into Sport might help pulling away however my car is the same, there is a pause however I'm quite easy on the throttle !

if I've understood correctly, it's nor really a "small hesitation" ... the previous D4, when I caught the brake pedal, was more a "hmmm ... did someone just press the pedal? i'd better check. oh, looks like they did. should I do something ? ..."

really disconcerting ... enough revs to pull you across someone's path but not enough to then move you out of the way.

I'm going to get in touch with the garage tomorrow about taking it in for them to look at it.

The thing I'm most worried about is the fact it didn't drive whilst on a slope or doing a hill start. Surely that can't be normal?

Que? Not sure I follow that last bit. Are you saying it won't go up slopes? Many on here think that's what we have Land Rovers for 😁

I had to do a hill start the other day, put the car in drive and went to accelerate and it didn't seem to want to know! Putting it into neutral and back into drive cured this and it happened a week prior to this, reversing up a small slope.

Again perhaps there was some kind of delay, but I felt it was probably better to be on the safe side and put it into neutral than attempt to give it some, as it honestly was like the car wasn't in gear.

Hope this worked ... Not uploaded directly from phone before.

I've clearly got a black mark on side of sole of right trainer so I'm deffo catching brake when accelerating. And not having issues with this D4 I did with previous. So it IS fixable ... Get back to dealer and tell them to sort it.

Ok, well to take this to the next level now, the car will not go into sport mode! The shift lever will not go left at all, just will not budge. On my disco 3 you could pretty much push it left with your little finger!

I shall be contacting the garage I bought it from first thing tomorrow!
