Ah - obviously there's something amiss. I had a similar problem. The gear selector drop link bush seized, making it impossible to properly select gears. Had assistance out and the excellent technician that arrived quickly diagnosed it and took it off, fiddled with it, oiled it and got it working enough so that it lasted until the recent service when it was replaced. Hopefully it's as simple as something like that.

Thank you all for your useful inputs. I thought I would give you an update.

I took the car back to the garage and explained the symptoms. As I expected the air suspension compressor was on it's last legs, so that has been changed (though I'm wondering if I should now get the height calibrated?).

The issue of not being able to go over to sport mode was due to the fact at some point in the cars life, a fizzy or sticky drink had been spilt here and the plastic bits surround the selector (that always seem to remind me of a camera iris), were all stuck together! They diagnosed this, but when I got it back it was still stuck, so ended up fixing this myself.

Now on to the gear issue with it appearing not to be in gear, again the other day I had to reverse up a slope and the car wasn't particularly pleased. I've decided I'm going to take it to a very reputable LR independent not far from me, and see what their thoughts are.
