SDV6 Remap: any experience?

Hi,

Has anyone experience with remapping an 2012 SDV6 engine (256bhp)?

Pros and Cons?

I did it on my 2002 Td5 Disco 2 and it worked fantastically well. Much easier to cruise and lower torque.
At 70-80 mph was probably even more efficient on fuel.

I am wondering if it is worth and safe on my D4.

Cheers

Nic

Nic,

I've done a few of these now mobile, and all have increased torque and once the 8 speed box adapts to the increased power available, you get a bigger permagrin.

Drop me a message and can chat through abut yours, no problem. Thumbs Up

You are taking an 3.0 litre engine that produces 600nm of torque and doing what with it? Mate you're nuts ... sometimes in life just be happy with what you got ... the engine is already tuned to within an inch of it's life and letting an aftermarket tuner just pump more fuel in doesn't make sense ...I know where they will be when the engine blows up.

Apparently the 2.7 was tuned where it was because of the gearbox (risk). With the d4 the tdv6 I guess they did the same thing with the new gearbox ... when it was sound they turned up the wick with the SD variant. Yes tune the 2.7 and especially the 3.0 tdv6... tuning the SD is looking for a problem.

There is only about 10bhp difference between the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 in the disco so cant see what you are on about. I doubt that engine is tuned anywhere near an inch of its life. I don't believe the gearbox was the limiting factor for the 2.7TDV6 either. Care to elaborate?

@ brettkaz - all the remap will do is bring it up to where the SDV6 outpts are when its in the RRS, so 300odd BHP and 700NM torque - whats wrong with that as its standard from LR.

And I think what you are refering to as the gearbox risk was actual clutch risk, as the clutch in the manual D3 was more of a weak point than the gearbox.

Here are some comparatives with other manufacturers and where they have tuned their engines - you can make up your own mind if anything beyond 600nm is pushing the limit. Having your car factory tuned to that level is one thing ... trusting an aftermarket tuner is another. Every time the numbers go up you are creating a larger risk of overfuelling. My original point was - you already have a factory tuned car that goes like stink ... and at the upper level of it's tuning ... why have someone mess with it for the sake of what 5-10% performance....

I had my D3 remapped by Disco_mikey over 5 years ago, its still going strong and no clutch issues that I know of from the new owner

A lot is about who the tuner is, there are some I would trust, others I wouldn't even trust to tune my radio!

straight from the LR website for the 8speed RRS:

Engine Power (hp) Torque (Nm)
LR-SDV6 3.0 Litre Diesel 306 700

so the engine in the D4 isnt near its tuning limits

Wonder if that would have an effect on the dreaded problem - the one that we shall not speak its name?

Mine is just a question.

I agree that the less you touch the better it is. Nevertheless it seems like there is still a lot you can get out of it safely.

Comparing with other engine has got a very limited value. New 4 cylinder 2.0 later engine nowadays easily produce around 250 bhp (volvo, volkswagen just the one I can think about). On this principle a 3.0L V6 can go beyond that. Again I don't think this is a good parameter.

I also agree that the car goes well as it is but if it can be better without loosing reliability why not?

obviously not quite comparing apples with, er, apples but I remember an article many (many) years ago about whether diesels could compete in formula 1 and the conclusion was that a 3.5L V8 diesel could "conservatively" muster 700BHP.

Pretty sure they weren't the sort of Conservatives who meet at the club round the corner from me Smile

Earlier Discos were - as someone has said - restricted more by gearbox than what the lump could reliably generate.
