Upper Tailgate switch

A few months ago, the upper tailgate switch stopped working but the button on the keyfob was fine, so I ignored the issue until the days got a bit warmer!

Finally got round to looking into it over the weekend, having looked on here and read threads about how it's the switch that's at fault. New switch had arrived on Thursday, so off I went to do what was going to be an easy fix.

Or so I thought.

Removed the old switch first, and having bared the ends of the wiring, I touched them together just to check it works ok before attaching the new switch - nothing happened. Of course I was now committed to fitting the new switch anyway, but it's just as dead as the old one. Keyfob still works though.

Any ideas?

Sorry for jumping in here ... no help to you Sheepy ... but I've seen a "trick" for opening D3 tailgate by holding lock/inlock switches at same time. On my D4 it's a rocker switch so that obviously doesn't apply but is there a means to do it on D4 ?

Whilst pulling the tailgate open, press the button on the key. Thumbs Up

Sheepy, if the replacement is surplus to requirements PM me details please as I may buy it from you as my D4 needs another new one after the rubber on the cheap Chinese replacement I bought via ebay cracked within a couple of weeks and the seller disappeared Evil or Very Mad

Sadly my replacement is needed, because I cut the old switch off first!

Didn't get a chance to look further over the weekend, but have seen a suggestion that I should check to see if 12v is present at the switch as if it is, it might be an earth issue, and if it isn't, there's a break somewhere else in the wiring harness.

I'll test that theory first.

I was thinking of scenario where SWMBO is approaching car and I can't be bothered getting out to help her with putting the shopping in the boot. Smile

tailgate switch

i went through all the problems you are seeing. Don't bother looking for 12v at the switch as it operates at a lower voltage (Kanbus is guess).
If the fault manages to store in the vehicles computer you will need to get the fault cleared off with landrover software.
Takes 5 mins to do and my local indy did it FOC.
Never had an issue since.

PS - Does anyone have or know where to buy just the rubber cover for this switch.

Thanks for that, the car is going into my local indy in a week or so, as it's due a 7yr service. They've said they'll "have a look"!

Turns out that the wires running to the switch had degraded and broken up internally. Garage has replaced the wiring harness (and switch), and it's now working nicely.

Sailed through the 7yr service and MOT too, so will be waiting for me with new belts and a year's ticket when I get back from Texas!
