New Discovery 3 owner, terrible brakes - oil in servo!

I know the oil in servo issue is old news for you guys, but having just bought a 2006 Disco 3 I'm trying to get my head around it, and work out the best plan of action.

According to LR's records the recall work was completed in 2009 Neutral

Symptoms: Brake pedal rock hard at the end of travel due loss of vacuum assistance, servo full of oil & gurgling.
I have sucked as much oil out of the servo as I could, the issue still remains. Is it the case that once contaminated in this way the servo is damaged and no longer serviceable?
It's not just a reduction in capacity in the servo caused by the oil?

I'm not at all used to having work done on my vehicles by dealerships/garages, I'm a competent mechanic/engineer and prefer to undertake maintenance work myself. My usual course of action would be to identify the culprits and fit uprated parts in their place.

On this occasion am I better to swallow my pride and ask LR to investigate and complete any work required under the original recall?

They will repeat the recall as necessary. You clearly have a good case.

Yeah grit your teeth and take to the dealer Surprised

And they should give you a shiny new servo

I recently had this problem with oil in the brake servo even after the recall
Work was done in 2010? Ish?

I contacted LR Australia and ended up writing an email
And documented my serial number and it fell
Into the recall range, after a week or two
I had feedback that they would replace the brake servo,
And new vacumn tubing and valve etc, at no cost.

My car was well out of warranty and is just over 10 years old.

I think it helped that I purchased the car brand new and had the car solely serviced by my local
Land Rover dealer.

Are you dealing with the national head office customer centre? Ie LR UK CRC.

In my dealings I stated that the recall work performed in 2010 was not at a suffient standard that addressed product recall P017.

LR Australia, agreed that if the problem has reoccurred again, then the design fault was not addressed during the initials P017 recall.

In Australia national product recalls are listed through the ACCC, the national consumer commission and consumers can keep retailers accountable for faulty products.

I mentioned in my correspondence to LR that i would complain to the ACCC about the quality of the P017 recal work that was performed in 2010.

I had no problems with LRA agreeing to fix the servo etc.

I replied to the above email stating how disappointed I was with LR's response, and that this was a safety recall due to poor design, not warranty work. They didn't even bother to reply.

I paid for all the required work to be done by an independent specialist, before someone was killed by LR's bodge.

To say I'm angry with LR's customer service would be an understatement.

I wouldn't let this be the end of it, if I and others can get this issue fixed at no cost on a 10 year old vehicle, then you should have no problem.

My first phone call to LR got the brush off, but that all changed after I mentioned that I can show that LR have fixed this issue even 10 years after purchase.

This issue is a design fault, not a wear and tear issue.

Hello Guys, these symptoms echo my disco exactly... scary... Shocked Shocked

Mine is a 54 plate HSE, looks very like the work has already been done as i can see the valve and altered pipework etc although cannot tell when.
but on the back of this;

I have contacted my local Harwoods to see what they say, have told them it's under recall P017 and that i think it has failed again and am waiting for them to call me back...

Will keep this forum posted and see how I get on.. Rolling Eyes

Well a week has gone by - rather busy myself and not had change to follow up etc but not a squeak in reply from Harwoods.

Anyhow - i have the LR customer service number from a mate and am going to give them a try to see what happens on that.

same problem here

UPDATE

I just spoke to Land Rover customer service.

Due to vehicle age (10+ yrs), mileage (115000), the fact that I purchased it privately, and have not had it serviced at a dealership - it is "very unlikely" that they would offer any help.

I also spoke to another local highly respected (ex Land Rover and 30 yrs experience) Indie - and he also told me not to waste time or money with them, he has seen many similar.

What p!ssed me off most was that she mentioned "brand loyalty" as being a factor is their discretion to help, which means that it's OK for you to drive around in a potential death trap if you have chosen to use an independent mechanic rather than a main dealer for your servicing.

My only consolation is that I didn't let them fleece me of any cash for the privilege of telling me that I had to foot the bill myself.

I have a funny feeling that a lot of you are driving round with oil in your servo, you just don't know it, check if I were you - pull the pipe off the grommet and dip the servo with a long cable tie).
