Zenon Headlight Shutting Off |
|
My NAS LR3 drivers side headlight shuts off on its own while driving. When it started doing it, I changed the bulb. However, I'll be driving, it goes out, but, if I stop at a traffic light, put the truck in park, turn the headlights off and on, the light comes back on. Any ideas what might be at fault here?

I'm like you a keen owner & want a simple fix.
I'd guess at a loose or dirty (oxidised) connection somewhere as you can rule out the Xenon bulb & the Xenon (I think it's a ballast) unit on the lower side of the head lamp.
I'd take the light unit out & peer into each 1/2 of the connection plug - use some spray solvent switch / connection solvent cleaner (a brand I have a spray if is Inhibisol...which I got here from RS)...you'll have your own brands there.
What you sometimes see is a green / white powdery residue....the solvent (above) cleans this off - use the pointy end of a cocktail stick to rub the resudue away on each actual connection pin in the plug.
Then a small amount of WD40 on the plug "halves" before reconnecting.
Work your way back & check fuses & relay.
I have had to do this to odd things on my D3....it's the age if the vehicle, the environment its used in etc.
Just a simple low cost check you can do yourself before wasting $'s on buying things just to see. BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Most likely it's your ballast going. I would swap your ballasts between the headlights and see if the problem follows to the opposite headlight. If so, it's a simple, though not necessarily cheap fix to replace.

had this on my CLS Merc
It was the ballast failing
Purple tinge to light indicated bulb failing
if ignite fails (the box the bulb connects it will flash or dim)
If the ballast fails it will flash/dim/ generally resets after turning on and off but will continue to break down after a short period
Swap ballasts from either side to isolate problem and then replace as necessary
easy job as headlights come out unlike the merc where you have to get the wheel arch lining off! ....................................................................................................
If my wife ever sells my stuff for what she thinks I paid for them, you lot are gonna get some bargains!

Yes, I'm leaning this way too. Good thing a friend has a couple LR3's in his scrapyard
