I have just washed my car after N500 and when I had finished I could smell burning, I have disconnected battery and had a look but cannot see anything. I have reconnected battery and the car is dead no lights nothing ! The only thing that lights up is the park brake light. The car is completely dead, does anyone know what could be wrong ? What should I check ? I have checked pollen filter and its dry,there is a small amount of water in passenger footwell but that is normal when its facing downhill when I wash itThe happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Battery voltage reading 11v so looks like alternator. Did your 2 alternators go just like that,1min all working next nothing and smell of burning ?
I should mention that I reversed car up my driveway after I had washed it and it was ok. It was about 5mins after that I noticed the smell .The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Mark, Have you still got the spare alternator from Mick? How old is your old one?

Just a thought, you didn't give the engine bay any good news with the hose at all.

If it was fella it would be the car not me going in, unfortunately it's dead so I can't get it in The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

my alternator failed very quickly. Drove to work and everything was fine but when I came to go home couldn't get the doors open as the battery was totally dead.
Land Rover assist came out and disgnosed failed alternator. He disconnected the cable from the battery to the alternator to prevent the alternator affecting the battery again and put a new battery on this got me going then he followed me the 20 miles to the dealer.Andy

In a roundabout way that's handy it happened at home then Mark
As you had the spare alternator that's only done about 1000 miles now , albeit in the box,
Good luck, without tempting fate, mines is still running sweet as a nut

You are right at least it waited. I may have a do at it over the bank holiday. Unfortunately I have to work today and tomorrow so not sure when I will get a chance. I think getting the fan off is going to be the hardest part and also will have to buy a spanner to do it.The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;

Mark, I removed my fan like this..........I used a spanner on the nut with a piece of copper pipe slid over to extend the handle and a large adjustable spanner on the main part.
While holding the small spanner/copper pipe I gave the large spanner a sharp hit with a hammer to shock it loose and it came undone first time
