Someone please help me identify that tapping noise!

I'm struggling to source this one...

I recently returned from a long holiday in the D3 which involved some pretty rough off road sections which really shook and threw the car around a bit. At one point we grounded the bottom of it in deep ruts and there was lots of crashing and knocking. Since returning, I am noticing a new tapping/knocking noise that sounds like it's coming from somewhere inside the car behind me (around the 2nd/3rd row cabin perhaps). I cleared out the whole interior today and gave it a deep clean so I know there's no loose trim or anything knocking about.

The only way I can describe it is like this (bear with me)..... It's like there's two marbles hanging on a pendulum hidden away somewhere, and whenever I drive on a rough cobbled road (which rocks the car a bit) the marbles knock into each other. I also sometimes hear it when I accelerate or deccelerate sharply.
Maybe it's coming from beneath or outside of the car? I'm just really struggling to find what's causing it at all.

One other theory... When we were on the trip we seemed to get a stone stuck in the brake or wheel during that really rocky/bumpy bit where we were scraping its tummy. It took a couple of days before we stopped hearing it.. I'm wondering if something's been affected in the brakes/wheels/underside somewhere?!

Please tell me someone's encountered this marble clicking noise?? I think I'm losing my own marbles over it! Laughing

Cheers,
Chris

could it be the harmonic damping weight thingys under the rear bumper knocking?
When you are dead, you do not know you are dead. All of the pain is felt by others. The same thing happens when you are stupid.

How about something connected with the roof rack...I get an occasional knocking from behind the drivers seat which I think is a roof panel flexing??

Check there is nothing in the rearmost cup holders Thumbs Up
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Though it may sound stupid and ridiculously obvious I've just had the same noise driving down the lanes which was a solitary drink can sliding around deep at the bottom of the cooler! Very Happy

Thanks for the replies all!

Checked all cupholders during the deep clean today but nothing there. Even emptied out the storage bins in the third rows in case something was rattling around in there.

The hanging damping weight things are hanging free but not sure how to tell if they'd be causing knocking Confused

have you been underneath yet to look for anything obvious,if not then that's the first thing to do as you've grounded the underneath out so i'd be checking to make sure something important was not about to drop off,my guess would be exhaust/propshaft/spare wheel or roll bar droplinks

have you checked all the rear seats are latched down esp 6/7

anyway your either getting under today or paying someone else to look good luck
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

Tried rear seats and locked them in the up position to try that too. No difference. I'll go and check the tailgate now.

Today's observation - it seems to be worse when I'm driving downhill. Not sure what that tells me. It was quite loud today that my passengers even noticed and commented on it (so it's not just me being OCD!).

Have you got any underbody protection on? I had a knock/rattle for months. I was going mad until I removed my compressor guard and then ... Silence.
