New front disk red hot after replacing

Hi all, I just finished fitting two new front hub assemblys and two new disks and pads. After coming back from a 10min test drive I noticed the near side disk was roasting hot and smelling quite hot too. The offside one seems fine and wasn't too hot to touch. I'm glad I only went for a short spin now! Any ideas what the cause could be? Has anyone ever experienced this before after fitting new parts? [/code]

At a guess I would say binding caliper? Sad

Usually ends with replacing the caliper as it isn't worth overhauling the one(s) you have. If you decide to change then change both sides at the same time.

Along these lines............

Good luck.

Thanks for replying. Il take off the calliper again and see was it something I did wrong. The calliper was working perfectly this morning prior to me going at it so hopefully it's just a pad not seated correctly or something

If the old pads and discs were worn, the caliper piston would have been extended. You've pushed it back in to fit the new discs and pads, and now its stuck on some corrosion (around the end of the piston).

That would be my guess Thumbs Up

So I took off the caliper again and took out the pads. I cleaned around the pots made sure there were no bits of rust/dirt. I then pushed back the pots as far as they would go using a clamp and the old brake pad. put back the new pads with a bit of copper grease on the back and reinstalled the caliper and wheel. went for a spin and when I got back the disk was still way hotter than the other one, so the problem persists. I can turn the wheel by hand so its not completely stuck. Mad not sure of the next step

When you refitted the pads did you scrape all the crud out of the channels the pads move in?

Yes I gave the channels a clean but I did notice It was tight so I put a small bit of copper grease on the lugs on the pad

For the price of a new caliper get it replaced before you warp your new disc as well

SUCCESS! So after another few hours messing around with the calliper in a last ditch attempt to get the pads to stop sticking I got to the bottom of it. I had already noticed the pads were quite tight in the metal clip/track that is seated into the calliper but I just thought it was normal. This morning I wanted to investigate this more so I took it all apart again and I couldn't even slide the pads with my hand they were that tight, and the two pots/pistons were perfectly level so they were working. It turns out the after market pads I got were a fraction too long so I took a hair off the lugs on the belt sander and they were much better. Put everything back together and all is working well again and no sticking!

Well done - the difference between a mechanic/technician who fixes something , and a Fitter who just changes things.

(PS i dont know your profession, but just a general comment on your perseverence)

Cheers, it's great when it works out! I'm actually a carpenter so I'm not sure where that leaves me 😃
