Am I Doing The Right Thing??

Morning lads!

Need a bit of a sanity check today, so i said i'd run this by ye!

Im bringing my father to go look at a 2005 D3 5 seat commercial crewcab (Were based in Ireland, crewcab means cheaper tax for us) and i just want to make sure im not mad getting him one.

So the story is as follows:

Hes had a UK import Nissan Navara LE for the last 8 years, which has just been inspected by Nissan and determine to be a rotbox. They are offering €6k to buy it back.

So he needs a replacement vehicle, thats commercial, has 5 seats, ideally plenty of space in the back for SCUBA,kayaking, boating, etc gear, and suits his lifestyle of outdoor activities, towing etc in the same way as the Nissan did.

Naturally, I thought the Disco was the perfect vehicle for the above, bar the fact that his boot space would be much smaller. So i went on the hunt for one and came up with what looks like a very clean and well looked after 2005 crewcab 5 seater. It is a basic enough spec but as i explained to him, fitting the features his Navar had, like cruise control and heated seats, would be possible if he wanted them.

2005, 163000miles, TDV6 S

On the face of it, its very clean, body and interior look very well looked after, the seller maintains it is in perfect working order, has recently had a front wheel bearing replaced and a full service.
It has some service history with it, and i have rang the main dealer who has been dealing with its maintenance for the past few years and they have replaced the clutch and flywheel in 2015 along with another wheel bearing on the front (other side) and general wear and tear throughout the years.

What has me concerned is the following:

The main dealer has not dealt with the services on it since day one, so were only able to give info for the last few years. prior to them dealing with it, the timing belts were done elsewhere, so my concern is, was the pump done also or am i looking at a potential ticking time bomb?
As well as that ive no info on whether the ususal suspects have gone throughout the years, Compressor, Fuel Pump, Park Brake module etc..

The D3 is advertised for €6950 and i would hope to get it for €6500 or less as my father hasnt really got much to put towards replacing the vehicle as it was never his intention to be changing vehicle at all, this is a decision that hes being forced to make really!

Ive a D3 myself and am quite familiar with the potential concerns with them, so ill be thoroughly checking this one today before making a decision on it.
Ill also be the one dealing with its maintenance and upkeep so, he'll be saving on mechanic costs, however parts are not cheap for these vehicles...

Anyway, I just wanted yere opinions on whether i was mad to be suggesting a D3 as a replacement, or is it the right move!

Rant over!

Cheers!

Hi Mate,

I don't have all that much experience in this sector, but if the dealer is worth is salt I am pretty sure he can offer you a warranty with the vehicle.

I bought my Disco a year ago (2007 with 93k on the clock) and I bought two years warranty for £400. So far I have claimed about £1500 off it - they really do take alot (not all) stress out of ownership.

Good luck.

Ask the seller for his invoices. If he had regular maintenance, a big flush [autobox, every 80.000km], distrution AND tensioner & return roller done, he must have the paperwork.

Important detail : mileage ?!?

Without the invoices : don't touch it with a stick. Thats my opinion, not science.. Mr. Green

Problem I see is you convince him to buy it and when it goes wrong it will always be your fault!

Cheers for the replies lads!

we went and looked at the Disco, I spent 3 hours going through it from top to bottom, and it seemed to be very very good.

All shocks and bushings seemed perfect
New front pads and discs
New rear pads
compressor sounded nice and quiet, operated the suspension with no issues or warnings
every button, knob and switch doing what it should
engine sounded spot on, pulled very well, no bad smoke, no trouble starting
drives straight as an arrow, stops just as straight and as quickly as you would expect something that size!

Seems to have been well looked after by previous owners and by all accounts, an honest D3.

So, as mentioned by 'lynalldiscovery', i didnt want to have the last word on it, i had a chat with the father, told him what i thought and that ultimately he had to make his own mind up, so he did, and he bought it Smile

Managed to get it for €6350 and he filled the tank to the brim.

Hes delighted with it and already much prefers it in many ways to his Navara, fingers crossed it looks after him now!

@ Lockey. So no invoices ? I suggest your dad puts aside GBP 100,- eacht month for the EVENT that will likely happen the next years..
Every two years something 'goes' that end up costing me between € 500 and €3500... Better safe then sorry... Save up a little cash..

its high miles

so either ha had the work done or not done
to me its a blank canvass.

...you can buy it & use - hope for the best ~ risky & potentially costly
or cost out the essential you need to do
Oil pump maybe
belts either its yes they've been done & may be near second set
suspension parts these have to have some things done - but budget for more
transmission its a manual - no torque convertor + point
suspension air compressor - may need doing.
brakes - an ongoing labour of love & money

....lots of other bits crop up but its the ones that stop you using it & may incur dat costs you need to be aware of.

do you do DIY repairs or have you a good indie near you ?
makes all the difference

Good Luck !

Sorry! should have explained the service history situation Very Happy

So it has 260000kms on the clock

0-120000kms is main dealer history, confirmed by the service booklet, all standard services, standard wear and tear.
There is then a gap in service history for about 2 years, and then it was maintained by a different Main Dealer, who i called, and were happy to tell me the service history with them (It was not recorded in the service booklet).
They did all work on it from (i think) 160000kms to the last service, have replaced the following outside of standard services:

Wheel bearing on the front
Front Discs (As mentioned above)
wheel bearing on the back
Clutch, release bearing and flywheel
And a tow bar recall was don to replace the removable hitch with a solid unit.

I must ring them back to see would they oblige me by sending out a copy of the service history, i doubt they will though. I was lucky enough to have spoken to the mechanic who did the last service on it, who reckoned it was an honest and well looked after D3 also.

My main concern is that the t/belt was done outside of a main dealer to the best of my knowledge, as it has been done but there is no mention of it in main dealer history, so my first job is to see what oil pump is on it, doing the belts and pump has been factored into the cost of the vehicle though.

And yeah i do all the work on these myself so it'll basically cost the price of parts Smile

When you do the belts : replace tensioner and return wheel. My '06 had rust in the bearings, luckily the mechanic - thanks again Phil Thumbs Up -
spotted it in time and replaced them..

Ofcourse the oilpump is the next best thing to replace when you're at it.. Idea

It's 12 years old, its 165k mileage and it's about £4.5k - are you really expecting a risk free, FSH, every-receipt-from-new motor considering that Confused
