M40 carpark
Been sat near Henley in Arden for 3 hours 20 mins and reporting will be another 3 hours before expected clear. Apparently a 'jumper' on bridge. Afraid sympathy waning with tens of THOUSANDS stuck because of it. What about people stuck with kids, old, frail, etc. What about THEIR 'safety'

My Mrs had the same scenario some years ago on the M20 one cold winter evening, arriving at a tailback just before a bridge... she had just picked up our 4 year old from school and joined the queue at 4.30 pm... at 10.30 pm she was still there without any refreshment or comfort break for the youngster.. apparently the crowd below were baying for blood at the end telling him to jump and get it over with!

Apparently someone in Japan got fed up waiting and helped the person on their way, read a few years back in some paper.
It happens up here a lot on the Forth Road Bridge and it does get a bit tiresome waiting on the grand finale.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

4.5 hours in the end, think the total for 'first on the scene' was around five hours. Has to be a better way than just 'lets wait and see'. On M40 I rang a mate to give him warning and he got off at the 'tail end' down by Banbury, around 25 miles or so as it was just slowing to walking pace there
On M42 it was between Longbridge turn and Brum airport shut off/diverted apparently and the obvious knock-on effect on all surrounding routes. Must have been 10's of 1000's of people affected. I was dropping two visitors back to Brum airport and they cancelled one flight, re-booked it and missed that one too. Had to book hotel and stop over
Too many 'bleeding hearts' on social media regarding the 'poor lamb' but nobody thinks about the people 'trapped' either. There were women and young kids around us, OK for blokes to nip over the barrier for a wazz........
A coach a bit behind us did open its doors to allow people to use their on-board loo, thought that was great
Somebody near us was en-route to collect kids from some trip and had no plan B for this event, another guy was worrying about his diabetes (seemed he had insulin but the reports just kept extending the expected end-point by half an hour every 10-15 minutes).
I even got phone call off my sis' saying a relative taken to hospital and my old mum was worrying and wondered if I could pick her up and take her to see him (he's 92 so guess he isn't coming home again....), not a close relative to me as such but would have hated to have got a similar message about one of my kids, missus, mum, etc.
This is second time this has happened to me, last time was on M5 near Bristol and that was another 5 hours then. There people were openly arguing with police top "just push the off" in the end......

Totally agree with you....there is no reason why they can't cone off a couple of lanes and at least release some of the traffic.....they probably don't for fear of frustrated motorists just shouting 'jump'!

Pity the police have no contingency plans for turning vehicles round and getting them off the motorway at the last exit
I think as a last resort it would be spanners out and dismantle the central barrier so I could turn round"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

Yeah, be careful Dean. Remember, we know where your kids go to school
I thought it was funny anyway Arthur.

Even the new sections of concrete.central reserve barriers have steel varioguard sections at intervals that can in emergency, be unbolted and moved aside to allow traffic to crossover.
I know the emergency services know where these are and should ideally use them in these instances of long waiting. The emergency road maintenance crews are usually not far off, usually based at a maintenance depot at one of the junctions.
