Where to hide a spare key.....

Hi
over the years I have always hidden an ignition key about the vehicle exterior incase of a lost key whilst miles from the spare key at home. Any ideas about concealing a spare key with keyless entry keys? Obviously at the mo a hidden key will mean that anybody can drive of once inside....
Wrap it in lead? Take the battery out of the fob?

Try an anti-static metallic bag, they act as a faraday cage and can block signals. I've never tried one to see if it blocks the key signals, but scrotes use them for nicking stuff with rfid tags from shops!

Like these ones

google "keep a key". Haven't used one since the late 70's though! Shocked I was really surprised that that they still exist!

Yep, but won't block the signals from the key, so car can't be locked!!

If I remember correctly, if you take the battery out more than 20seconds the fob looses its coding.

Also, IMHO, if your motor gets knicked and the insurers find out about your "hidden" key, I'm pretty certain you will be left high and dry without a vehicle or any form of compensation.

If travelling with trusted friends give them your spare key for the duration of the trip. I used to swap spare keys with BobbyCrispBox on the Tunisia trips, as well as using lanyards to keep the main key around ones neck or tied/clipped to a belt.
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

If You get Yourself a fake Key, by just copying the metalwork and put in in a 5$replacement plastickeycover, or just an old key cover, with an empty battery, then insurance might not be able to check.

But the issue w/ keyless go funtionality remains...

I like the idea of an antistatic bag. I’ll be on fleabay later looking for one/making one.

I believe that your insurers (not unreasonably) would not pay out if the hidden key was found and was then used to steal the vehicle however just having the key hidden would not stop a theft claim e.g. tow away theft.

I can see the whole point of an "at vehicle" spare key.
But a D3 is equiped with a transponder key that isn't exactly small & isn't put into a wallet.
A key blade isn't going to start your car. I believe the blade & fob have to be there.

Keyless systems (D4, D5, my XK) has a key blade but it's purpose is to open the car when the gizmo locking system doesn't want to play. Or car battery flat.

I guess you've already had an issue, bad "locked out " experience, lost your key, maybe broke your key...same result. It does happen - once in forty odd years for me

But maybe do things a different way.
My eldest has a bunch of keys that defies logic - all tethered up on a lanyard, the likelyhood of it being lost or misplaced is zero.
I just put my key into a zipped cargo trouser pocket. Pockets without holes.
You know the routine "testacles, spectacles, wallet & watch" from Nuns on the run manovevre.

I just wouldn't hide a transponder key on or anywhere near any of my cars purely that if it makes it any easier for some tea-leafing scrote I'm not going to provide it.
I've gone the other way & use Disklok - which means an extra key.

If we go in that car we usually take both keys - one with me one with SWMBO'd

Sorry basic stuff I know - not trying to patronise.
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.
