6hp26 - 2005 tdv6 d3 need tech advice

G'day all,
I have a 2005 discovery 3 tdv6 6sp auto.
Hands down the most incredible vehicle i have owned. She's up to just under 300,000 kms now and all has been well until this happened..
I drove to work early in the morning, parked up without any issue. Finished work and hopped in, started her up and clicked her into drive and she gave the usual assuring sensations/signs you feel/expect when selected. Took my foot of the brake and onto the go pedal and nothing. no drive. i cycled through all including manual shift and nothing. i clicked it into low range and in 1st could get it to move slowly, also in reverse.
i've researched this and can't find anyone whom has had the same thing happen. I know about the tc issues etc but the symptoms aren't what i have experienced. It drove without problem or any signs that something was wrong. the auto has had regular servicing around 60thou as i knew it would prolong life.
i took it straight to a so-called discovery specialist shop who's professional diagnosis was to hop in start it, select drive, reverse, park and then tell me it is stuffed and will be $6500 to fix. I got a second second opinion and they checked fluid/filter etc and they were fine. They also plugged a winston into it and it was showing a low pressure fault but also told me with the kms on it its better to pull it out and recon it.
I am now at a bit of a loss really and am hoping a guru may be able to give some advice as to what it may be to be so sudden? could the pressure pump be the cuplrit? if it was the tc wouldn't i have slip problems etc prior? i feel for it to happen like it did it would be electronic i.e solenoid?
i've researched the problems had with the mechatronics and solenoids but they're different symptoms.
thanks in advance guys n gals hopefully someone can help me nut this one out!

Have you checked the selector pivot linkage on the right side of the gearbox?
Apparently normally seize over here but at that mileage maybe its just worn out and not selecting forward gears?

If it was the pump/ low pressure (and it's not short of oil) the gearbox has to come out.
So its recon time

Ive had exactly your symptoms and it turned out to be a broken turbo. Car went into auto protect mode and disengaged the throttle. Could move it on idle low ratio but that was all.

Thanks Fellas, i still have full throttle response its just no drive. I guess i'm just not convinced it is a full recon solve. i know its done some k's but its been well maintained and given no trouble or hint of an issue and i'd be happy if it had!! at least then i would resign to "yep i got a good run etc" which i have but its just bugging me.. my gut is telling me its something less dramatic than a full recon. to drive perfectly in the morning and then instant no drive on start up in the arvo just doesn't make sense. thankyou everyone for your input and i will investigate further and keep you posted.

you could be right.

What what is the point on a high milage gearbox, in
removing the gearbox
sending it away to a specialist repairer for 1 month+
him changing 1 component in the gearbox
having your car off the road for 6 weeks +
refitting the gearbox
to find the problem has not been fixed
and/or 10K later something else has gone wrong in the gearbox.

When you could put a recon gearbox in quickly and hopefully get many more miles out of the gearbox ?

Whistle

I would start by draining the gearbox and replacing the solenoids only. I recently been having faults with my father's disco 3 with regards to the gearbox (200k + kms ODO) e.g. when shifting between gears revs flare up before shifting to next gear, when I really push the disco hard in the dunes I get a TC solenoid stuck/open fault ... I recently replaced all the solenoids, new fully synthetic ATF car has improved massively with almost instant/smooth gear changes. kilometer per liter has improved as well. done 2000 kms already.

I read on BMW forums whom use the same ZF boxes (zf6hp26), BMW replace the solenoids every 80k kms.

with your auto box it could simply be that the solenoids is not giving enough pressure to be able to shift into gear gear.

Just a thought,

I will be doing my Disco 3 next (even worse then my fathers). I use it for dune tours (currently just rolling chassis as timing belt tensioner bolt broke off, all valves bent) on a regular basis and if not in low range I get constant gearbox faults.
