My 2009 smokey D4

First good run and a chance to give it the berries.

And fooook me clouds of bluish smoke behind me... Censored SWIMBO is looking unimpressed Whistle

OMG I'm thinking I've bought a lemon but keeps going and all seems fine boot it and more smoke but not as bad, a few more times and all seems ok.

Once home a dig round on here and thank the big guy up stairs it looks like it is the oil return on second Turbo.

Will have a look underneath in the morning and see if it all fits.

These forum things are great Thumbs Up

Welcome

There is a mod that can be done to fix that - involves a different length scavenge pipe - someone more knowledgable will be along shortly Thumbs Up

Unfortunately no fix in the world worked on mine and LR threw everything at it before telling me it was 'representative of the marque' and there was nothing more they could do. It was a 2010MY:

Thankfully when I moved to a 2015MY the problem had been fixed.

Good luck.

I should add, my smoke was on start up AND under acceleration... not sure this vid shows the acceleration clips, but plenty of other threads on here do.

I don't miss my old car, but do wonder where she ended up. Plate from GY59.... I think!

This is interesting, I've got a 2010 D4 which smokes like a trooper, under hard acceleration, if it hasn't been booted for a while, and also reeks of burnt oil. This I assume is oil burning off from the second turbo, and I was beginning to think that there is a leaky oil seal somewhere, but reading this it seems that this is a common problem. I should also add that she is also down about a third on the dipstick after 3,000 miles, which seems a bit excessive to me, or is this not unusual for a D4, as I understand that they can drink a bit? Any ideas?

Once I get all my daily stuff done I'll be out for a look to see what's what.

I'm hoping that the oil feed modification has not been done....

But D3-D4 is a fairly new thing to me so it is fix while on the learning curve. Thumbs Up

My MY10 always smokes (not hugely, not more than a wisp) on start up when really cold (diesel smell) and on hard acceleration, then cleared OK, to return a few trips later

About 3 weeks ago it let lose an enormous amount of smoke (burnt oil smell) when just driving to local shops - really huge amount - then cleared - drove OK for 2 weeks then got 'Restricted Performance and the dreaded red triangle whilst accelerating on the M40 - initial AA diagnosis was a blown turbo.

After ride home in the big yellow taxi, Indy confirmed turbo OK, but fault in a sensor somewhere - after testing confirmed failed vacuum switch - turbo venting into airbox - waiting for part from LR.

I'm sure yours is absolutely fine (if it smokes like mine did that one time you would really, really know about it Mrs thought car was on fire and I've never seen a car smoke like it Shocked ) , but might be worth having it checked over for sanity's sake Thumbs Up

My original D4 suffered the same issue after it had done a few miles. It went back and forward to LR for month on end and was used as a guinea pig to try to resolve the issue along with one other which I believe was possibly 747JK's.
My car had several turbos fitted, loads and loads of modded pipes and inter coolers etc, egr valves injectors etc
LR could not fix it and replaced the engine at 20K miles. i then rejected the car as the body had been off several times and got a replacement vehicle. incidentally I believe the new engine cured the issue

Don't panic - read the info and decide if you think it's worth trying the mod.
It worked for me and plenty of others Smile

^^ Agree - I'm getting one fitted - been quoted £200

As I said before, I've had mine from new in March 2010 - and I noticed it first after about 1 year of ownership - and done it ever since over c.90K miles. The problem I had a couple of weeks ago was due to a failing part and a different smoking problem (engine was practically idling)

A few weeks in and ( touch wood ) not seen it since. Had a long run and a good hoofing to see what is what. Starting to think the last owner did not push it hard and I was just shifting the cobwebs.

Now collecting the bits for a full service, engine, turbo oil drain mod, autobox, and differentials and a sort out for the MOT.

Continual "hoofing" will burn the oil off in small quantities and you wont notice it. Stay below 2000rpm for a few days and then boot it and see what happens.

Well been pottering around for two weeks now, a quick run down the dual carriage way to Dundee yesterday and a few good hoofs with only a light wisp from behind. Laughing

Plan is now is full service with an intercooler clean out.

To that end in have placed orders for full set filters ( genuine), autobox metal sump and filter kit, transfer box and diff oil. MOT due 30th June so full investigation and see what is what.

Hope not to find to much else.

just found a few bit of nif naf that needs further exploration.
Rear window washer don't work.
N/S rear door does not open from inside.

Fingers crossed
