Road trip Alert! D4 + D5 all around Ireland!
Tomorrow, AndrewS, myself and our good ladies will be setting off on a short road trip across to Ireland. I'm taking the D4, Andrew will be in his new D5. We will be heading from Dublin, over to the west coast, via Limerick. Then heading up the Wild Atlantic way to the North.
Both cars are standard, on road tyres. I'm looking forward to some good side-by-side comparisons, and independent observations. Also some decent Guinness and food

So today was an easy day. Now sat in the bar in Limerick. Started in Chester this morning, where we met Andrew and Marie for breakfast. From there we drove straight to Holyhead. First thing I can say is the D5 looks really good from the front. I had Andrew in the rear view mirror most of the way, and I like the lighting, the proportion and presence of the D5.
We had a bit of time to kill at the ferry port, so Wendy and I sat in the back of Andrews D5 and had a good critique of what the inside was like. First thing I am going to say is that the rear seat is extremely comfortable. I love the HSE leather, it's very soft and they have thankfully got rid of the nasty seam that runs down the middle of the back rest on my D4. This is one of the things I don't like about my 4, on long journeys I am aware of it, and it annoys me. The 5 has a lovely ridged texture to the leather and it is very satisfying to sit on.
There was no issue with space, the leg room is more than ample, and myself, Wendy and Marie's clothes and baggage were easily accommodated. Yes there are slightly lower, but to me it was no issue at all. For me this is a non-issue.
The rear doors are large, and will need to be opened with care, however the access is good.
Once off the ferry in Ireland, we headed out through the tunnel, and onto the motorway. I spent a bit of time behind Andrew, and did wonder about the back end. Sometimes it looks great, others it's a bit odd. We stopped at the services and had a good long look. I really am not sure about the large areas of plastic under the rear. Andrew pointed out how flimsy they were, and they really are. A high speed run through a flood could cause an issue I reckon.
We then had a look in the boot, and the trim around the battery especially, which is also pretty flimsy. However, we had a good sit on the fold down flap and I personally think it's very comfortable. There is no plastic edge digging into your thighs, and if it were raining you would stay truly dry! However, that tailgate is big, and those corners are very sharp! If the car was parked like Andrews today, with a raised pavement behind, then even a short like me could crack their head! Andrew did try to demonstrate the gesture tailgate, but we gave up because the coffee was going cold!
Now we're in hotel in Limerick, and the route for tomorrow takes us to the Shannon ferry at Tarbert, for a short crossing. On the way we are going to visit the Seaplane and Maritime museum along the coast from here. Then it's up the coast to Galway and on to Cleggan for tomorrow nights stop over. There will be some decent photos tomorrow.
Interesting comment about the flimsy plastic and battery cover, that was one of the first comments I made when I got my D5
As for sharp cornrs to the boot lid, went into dealers yesterday for a couple of snags to be done to D5 and looked at FFRR, DS, Evoque and looked at the boot lid, all have the same sharp corners as the D5, some were slightly rounded but not enough to prevent any serious head injuries and all seemed to be slightly lower than the D5 but i have not heard the same criticism as there is for the D5MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

The battery cover is odd, we just took it off to see what was behind, and what it was made of (looks like some sort of recycled material) and despite both Andrew and myself being reasonably mechanically competent, we could not get it back on!
To me it looks like it has some kind of quick release mechanism that broke when Andrew pulled it off too quickly!
On balance, D4 battery covers never fitted properly either!
