Smashed lens on front facing camera

I've just got back tonight to find that the lens on one of my front facing cameras is damaged. it's still working, but the glass is smashed to bits.

Does anyone know if the glass is a separately replaceable item, or is it the whole unit? If so, does anyone know how much it is to buy just the glass, or the whole unit?

Thanks in advance! Thumbs Up

I'm surprised that no one else seems to have had this problem.

Putting two fragile protruding glass domes on the vulnerable corners of the front bumper and then both of them being damaged when mine arrived from LR with 12,900 miles on the clock and then it only taking another 5 months to damage one of them again (I think it was done while the car was in for a wash!) would tend to have suggested that this was a regular issue. It's just me then! Rolling Eyes

Haven't seen this topic crop up before so wouldn't have thought it was too common. Knowing LR I would imagine the whole thing will need replaced, they don't make it easy or cheap, but perhaps Dan@duckworths may point you in the right direction Thumbs Up

Thanks Thumbs Up I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

I've found that the camera itself can be bought on eBay for as little as £13.95 (huge surprise there), but I'm keen to see if Dan can source the glass. If the price is sensible I may keep a couple of pairs in the glovebox!

The eBay cameras are a poor copy and do not fit correctly. Its like they are slightly to big for the holders. I got mine fitted in the end but had to remove some of the plastic from holder

They aren't any better quality than the LR originals, are they?!

As it turns out, the cameras still work as well as they did when they left Solihull, it's just the glass cover that's the problem. I'm still away on holiday and as it hasn't rained yet, I've just renewed my supply of PVC tape to make a waterproof patch for it before it rains tomorrow. Are they difficult to get to to replace the glass?

According to the dealer, the lens is part of the whole assembly Rolling Eyes

The price, including VAT, for the part alone?.....

£252.00 Rolling with laughter

I'll live without it Rolling Eyes

Why not buy the cheap eBay one and change the domes.

Unfortunately, the eBay advert for £13.95 is for the camera only. If you need to pay Land Rover another £238.05 to get the glass dome as well!

I used to work as a design engineer in the company who makes these cameras for JLR, Valeo. The reason you cant just replace the lens is that it is cured onto the housing while the camera is running, this is done to ensure correct focus of the camera is achieved where the lens cures... so just replacing it isnt possible, the whole unit needs to be swapped out Sad We had a LOT of JLR returns with smashed lens's, as far as i know, none were replaced under warranty Sad

Skynet ... you've set your own challenge! there's surely enough room to do this ? I was p*ssing about changing sidelights yesterday and fathoming out how to add extra lights in the unit ... not all in good shapes but lots of room.

Thanks for that bit of information, I can understand that Thumbs Up

Having gone to that degree of trouble and with the camera not being a cheap item at all, I wonder how the image quality is as dire as it is? Fortunately, the ones under the door mirrors and for the rear door are quite useable. I shall live without the front one and carry on with the rest Thumbs Up
