Rear Differential clutch plate failure
Hi,
I wonder if anyone far more technical than me can offer any advice on this one.
I have a Discovery 3 2007 model year HSE spec with 68000 miles. I've owned it 6 years and done 54000 miles in it. The rear diff is the locking type and it has thrown up all sorts of error messages on a laptop saying the rear diff control module cannot read any signals and on opening up the rear diff the diff clutch plate is burned out. My local garage are suggesting an exchange reconditioned unit but are there any other options such as sourcing the clutch plate or having the diff rebuilt with better quality parts or a "remove and fit" better quality replacement. I'd prefer not to bung another Land Rover unit back on since I have little faith in the parts quality.
Any ideas anyone??

I would want to know why it burnt out before making any decisions , 68K seems very low unless it has been used extensively off road with the diff locking frequently.

Land Rover don't make the diff and the one they chose is a highly regarded quality item, so no idea when it comes to finding a higher quality part.
You have a 10 year old vehicle that you bought secondhand so we have no real idea what caused the failure as it could be a random failure mode, abuse, mismatched tyres, poor servicing, incorrect servicing or oil contamination.
I'd replace the required parts, ensure everything is running ok and just accept it as one of those things.
Oh and welcome to the forum!

Hi
Although it's 10 years old and I bought it used I have had it almost 7 yrs and it had only done 15000 when I acquired it, and with me it has never had a hard life.
It's my guess that the lock actuator is stuck on perhaps partially and it's burned the clutch out.
No idea why. I have found a reconditioners but they cannot fit a new clutch into the diff so it's an unknown second hand unit or a new one from JLR. And that still leaves unresolved the original cause of the failure.
