New (to me) Car: Should I get an Inspection Done? |
|
So I've put down a deposit on a D4 at Car Giant and will be collecting this weekend.
Car looked very tidy and in good nick but its a hefty chunk I'm putting down so wondering whether I should be having a Pre Purchase Inspection done?
They won't take the car to the LR Dealer so it would be a question of getting an AA or RAC inspection on site. Is this worth it? Am I likely to get anything meaningful out of it?
Grateful for any thoughts.
Cheers !

I can't honestly answer your question directly however I can say that if you do decide to do it, then make sure they allow your inspector to use their ramps/lift to be able to see under the car. You would obviously need to get them to agree this beforehand and timing would no doubt be important so need to make sure everyone - garage ramps and inspector are available at the same place and time. Otherwise a large portion of the paid for inspection is not possible.
Just wondering if there is a knowledgeable chap from this forum in your locality who might run an eye over it for you? I don't know if people do that here.
Perhaps you should consider a warranty . Is the garage offering you one? If not perhaps consider warranty direct who seem to be favoured on this forum. Plenty of info on here about getting the best deal.
Good luck with your purchase. Gary

One further thought - Anyone with an IID Tool in the North West London area who would be willing to let me borrow it (happy to leave a cash deposit) for a couple of hours so that I can at least check and read for fault codes?
Thanks!

Pay a chunk of it on a credit card ... "section 75" (of the consumer credit act ?) gives you rights against the credit card company if it's faulty. In reality, this will get their legal team bouncing all over the stealer until you're happy .

then finance some of the cost with them.... pay say 3 months worth then pay it all off. That way the finance co can swing into action againts the dealer if problems arise?

I would definitely get it checked over. My previous car before I got the Disco was from the used car company 'Quicks'. It drove well on the test drives but I wanted to confirm it was all okay and they actually agreed to let me take the vehicle to a local garage and had a once over. The mechabic produced a surprisingly long list of defects which I asked to be resolved prior to purchasing the vehicle.
Alarm bells would start ringing with me if they wouldn't let me get it checked over and I wasn't able to use a credit card.

"London's largest dealership" it says on their website. They do have a fair stock of Land Rovers in it seems, so, possibly they know a little about them. Possibly.
But, in effect, they are a car supermarket. Make of that what you will. I really don't understand why they don't take credit cards. I see they don't actually advertise any servicing or anything else on their site, so it's a pile 'em high, sell 'em quick sort of setup.
I think I might buy the likes of a VW Golf or Ford Fiesta or some other type of run of the mill car there, but perhaps not a big complicated thing like a D4. I suppose if the price is very favourable compared to LR dealers or even independent LR garages, one might be tempted. But I would, as you seem to be angling to do, have it independently checked out. Have a look on the RAC and AA websites, see what their offerings check.

Thanks All. Took the plunge and elected to go for a full RAC check with diagnostic too.
Hopefully will show up any stored faults and that the dealer hasn't already cleared them.

Very good. It would be interesting to give a bit of feedback on here about the RAC checks and report. Might help others thinking of using them, if you don't mind, of course.

Got the RAC report back. It was actually pretty comprehensive and picked up a few cosmetic things I hadn't noticed when I checked the car out.
Interestingly - he couldn't run a diagnostic test because the OBD port wasn't working but the report mentions a warning light coming up after the road test.
I have decided to walk away - even if they fix the OBD port I am not going to cough up more money to get the faults read. Now comes the battle to try and recover my deposit.
