Black plastic strip

As the title really, why do some cars have a black plastic strip running down the side?

I thought to start with they were GS models, but now i'm looking at more cars even HSE's have them, but not all.

I'm guessing you're referring to the side protection strips fitted half way up the doors which are designed to give some protection against car park dings.

That's what I would expect them to be, though not sure why are they are on some but not others?

Okay, thanks that explains it.

I don't suppose anyone knows if they are easily removed as I can't stand them lol and wouldn't want them on my own car.

They're stuck on with double side tape and can be fairly easily removed with an application of gentle heat, such as from a hair dryer. Personally I'd prefer to have them on and save my doors from the inevitable ding. Got them on a Freelander 2 and after almost 7 years it's still pretty ding free (touch wood it stays that way). Haven't got them on the Discovery, as they weren't available when I bought it and it's already got one ding on a door.

That's what side steps are for on a D4!
